I made a good move early on when I bought myself the excellent book "Programming Perl" by Larry Wall, Tom Christiansen and Randal L Schwartz (published by O'Reilly and Associates: http://www.oreilly.com) ISBN 1-56592-149-6. This is really more of a reference book than a tutorial - after the first chapter, the pace quickens considerably, and its really suitable for an experienced programmer with some UNIX system programming experience. The second edition provides comprehensive coverage of Perl 5 and extends to 645 pages. The related book "Learning Perl" from the same publishers may be better if you feel the need for lots of examples and explanations, though it does not include the full reference material.
