Michael first came to THOMAS from prison in 2005. At that time he was desperate to give us his drug addiction and successfully completed our rehabilitation programme. Michael explained that he did not find this easy and looking back felt he was not ready for a life completely free from substances. This led Michael back into a life off addiction for another 7 years.

He started coming to our Drop-in-Centre last year when all his benefits were sanctioned and had no money for food. At first he felt ashamed of having to come to the Drop-in. But as time went on he realised if you’re hungry then you have to eat.

He explains that many people in the Blackburn area see the Drop-in as a life saver. Especially if they are homeless and so many of them are living off that one hot meal a day. For many people the Drop-in is not only about getting food but often it is a place for them to talk and feel safe.

Michael feels that he got so much out of the Drop-in that he wanted to get involved. He had seen that he could use the drop-in as a way of supporting his own recovery, whilst giving back to others.

Michael goes on to explain “at first I would just stand at the hatch and chat to the staff who were serving meals.   I then started to pick up all the plates and hang around when they were closing to clean up the tables, making sure the building was tidy when everyone else had left.”

Michael is now a regular volunteer in our Drop-in and an inspiration for other service users. He loves coming down to the service and helps prepare the meals. He also meets some really nice supportive friends in the other volunteers. Summing up the Drop-in, Michael explains “It’s like a community at THOMAS, from the staff to the volunteers and service users.

Every one facing problems in this area knows that if they want help, or even just someone to talk to, then Father Jim’s door is always open. I’ve known people make excuses just to knock on the door and be able to have someone to talk to.
