James has joined the Team.

I first came into THOMAS on 5th November 2012. I had a history of alcohol abuse and addiction, I tried many times to give up, but it was affecting my health and I was homeless. i ended up in hospital twice with multiple organ failure, in a coma unable to cope with life.

I was not expected to survive but was discharged from hospital against all expectations. My sister asked me as she had done many times to seek help in a rehab. But I couldn’t cope with life in mental health institutions. I didn’t believe that normal people went into rehabs only pop stars and footballers and such and I didn’t expect it to work.

I went through the system, waited a couple of months and went into rehab and this week I have been clean for two years.

I had done well at school, they were very good to me; I went to 6th Form then college and then university. But I couldn’t cope with life and the problems without a drink. I had destroyed everything, relationships, my family, jobs. I couldn’t face the hurt I had caused to people, so I intentionally isolated myself, got a tent and slept rough for a considerable length of time. I tried again to re-establish my life in Kendal but was always failing.

Since rehab and through the programme at THOMAS I have been taught a new way of living, a new way of thinking, where I wouldn’t need drugs or alcohol to self-medicate. I can cope with life on life’s terms. I know that nothing can happen that can make me stray from the path. Problems can be overcome by talking to people, there is no need to put stuff into my system.

It’s been difficult at times, I had to deal with lots of emotions that had been locked away, but I believe it was necessary. I have lots of good friends. I know myself better now and I have the chance to look at parts of me in a way that I never would have if I had not come into rehab; so I believe I am fortunate in having that chance. It’s been a life lesson for me. Amazing.

I am now employed by THOMAS, ironic when you think I came through here. I was faced with the prospects that didn’t look good, but I have twenty years of working life ahead of me and working here is fantastic. To see things from the other side! I have empathy with clients because I understand them I have been there myself. I have support from members of staff here.

I am constantly training, constantly on courses, improving my mind and job skills. This is a very giving, productive environment.
