Coldstream

This is the home of the regiment the Coldstream Guards made more famous for their duties at Buckingham Palace. The central leg of this bridge is roughly where the Borderline runs between Scotland and England

Branxton Kirk (Flodden Field)

Scene of the worst defeat inflicted upon the Scots in 1513. Led by King James IV the "Flower of Scotland" was to wilt away and plunge Scotland into yet another period of unsettlement.

Greymare's Tail

Unspeakable beauty of the rolling hills that surround the St.Mary's loch. Peacefully breathtaking scenery located a few miles from Selkirk

Bannockburn

In total contrast to Flodden Field, Bannockburn saw the greatest turning point in the fortunes of Scotland. Not just by defeating the English in battle but it also put Scotland back on track for the claim to have King Robert the Bruce recognised as the true King of Scotland. Along with this claim was also the claim to have Scotland duely recognised as an independent nation once more.Within the visitor centre at Bannockburn there is a place set aside for King James VI and first of England. King James was the first true monarch to reign over both Scotland and England.

The Carter Bar

Essentially this is the borderline view point between Scotland and England. Adimittedly the best views are when you look towards Scotland and the hills in the background the views towards England are blocked by hills close to the Carter Bar. It was near here at Reideswire that the last known skirmish between Scotland and England took place. The affray started because of all things a truce when the two wardens of the respective Marches met to work out their differences. A shot was fired and all hell broke loose. Men from Jedburgh were quickly on the scene yelling their battle cry "Jethart's Here".

Carham

Following the theme of borderlines and battles Carham located near Coldstream and Kelso was the location of the first great battle between the ancient Northumbrians and the scots. In 1018 King Malcolm II defeated the Anglo-Danes that were claiming the land between the Tweed and the Forth. Ranked as one of the most momentous battles in Scottish history some how this battle gets overlooked for its importance compared to Bannockburn.
