Used by many of the scottish kings as their main residence, in preference to Roxburgh castle in the borders which was considered too close to the frontier to be a safe residence. Stirling castle had often been refered to by campaigning englishmen as being the gateway to the highlands. Once it was captured it was difficult to regain by means of force. The usual ploy of siege and deprivation was used to remove the occupants
Above you see the main gateway into the castle next to that is Stirling Bridge. This bridge replaces the original bridge that saw Sir William Wallace's first encounter with the english and led him onto many encounters in his bid to free Scotland of the tyrant Edward's army.
