SCULPTURE - Serena de la Hey
- Willow Sculpting- Somerset
Somerset is an exciting and
varied county, and no-one employs the natural environment
of The Somerset Levels better than the dedicated
sculptures, Serena de la Hey with her exciting and
varied sculptures.
Programme participants will
learn of the historical and current uses of willow.
During a few days, and under Serena's guidance,
participants will sculpt their own object out of
the medium - for example a simple heron - while
having a chance throughout the programme to explore
the Somerset Levels, a Natural Conservation Site,
and see willow grow.
Participants on Serena de la Hey's programmes will
stay at the nearby county town of Taunton, at The
Castle Hotel. Steeped in Somerset History, The Castle
Hotel offers the quality with which Art At Work
is associated: The Michelin star restaurant and
sumptuous rooms complement the appeal of working
with Serena in Somerset.
Artist: Serena de la
Hey
Born in East Africa, Serena has based herself at
English Hurdle, a fourth-generation family firm
committed to the growth and use of willow, an indigenous
resource.
Serena has a strong international profile, with
work exhibited in the USA and Uruguay. She is known
best by the British public for her "Willow Man"
sculpture alongside the M5 at Bridgwater. She exhibits
in such exceptional venues as The Lost Gardens of
Heligan in Cornwall.
Serena understands the cultivation and use of willow,
and what matters most about her work is her great
enthusiasm for the interaction between her work
and the environment in which she sculpts. The consideration
is one of the reasons her programmes for Art At
Work will benefit clients: How does the environment
affect our attitudes to work?
