DYBALL

My paternal grandmother was Amy Louise Dyball (1898-1971). She was born at Great Ormesby (now known as Ormesby St Margaret) in 1898, the 15th of 18 children all born at about 15 month intervals. With the aid of many Internet contacts the fate of most of her siblings is now known to at least the next generation. Only two are still missing: Ellen Gertrude (born 1892) and Samuel Jacob (born 1893). When I started researching I only knew what happened to three of my grandmother's siblings so the Internet has provided many answers.

17 of the 18 children lived to adulthood. This photo was taken in 1903.

Back row: Edward (Arthur), Frank?, Millie?, Ernest (Bill)?, Naomi (Leah), Thomas, Alice?
Frank and Bill may be reversed, also Millie and Alice.
Middle row: Ellen (Gertie), Edith, Redvers (Buller), Charles (father), Hannah (mother), Reginald (Jim) - on mother's lap, Florence.
Front row: Dorothy (Grace), Amy, Samuel, Anna (Doll), Frederick (Fradie).

Many, many, many thanks to Jean Novotny, granddaughter of Edward Arthur, for sending me a copy of this wonderful picture. I had heard of it but had never seen it until December 1998.

Amy Louise Dyball married Samuel Percy CHEESMAN (1895-1978) in 1924 at his home town of Brighton, Sussex. They met while he was training with the army in Norfolk. Samuel and Amy had four children at Brighton.

Amy's father, my great-grandfather, was Charles William Dyball (1858-1920). Charles married Hannah Maria STARKINGS (1858-1943) at Martham on Christmas Day 1878. He worked his way up to signalman on the small railway line which used to run through northern and eastern Norfolk. The line took people from the Midlands to Lowestoft in Suffolk. Charles started work at Martham as a porter by 1881 and had become a signalman at Ormesby by 1891. In between these censuses Charles had added to his family at several other villages on the line: Hickling, Stalham and Hackford near Reepham. At Stalham Charles worked as the station master.

Charles named many of his children after his own siblings which is probably why so many of them were known by nicknames or by their second names. The full list is: Edith Maria, Florence Mary, Ernest William, Frank Charles, Naomi Leah, Millie Ruth, Thomas William, Alice Rebecca, Edward Arthur, Bertie Obadiah, Ellen Gertrude, Samuel Jacob, Frederick John, Anna Rachel, Amy Louise, Dorothy Grace, Redvers Bertie, Reginald James.

This is what became of 15 of my grandmother Amy's siblings:
Bertie Obadiah died in 1896 at the age of 6.
Ernest William died in 1915 while serving in France during WW1.
Thanks to John Taylor of Perth, Australia for finding the following five marriages at Ormesby St Margaret:
Edith Maria married Walter Edward KNIGHTS in 1904, they probably lived at Great Yarmouth.
Naomi Leah married Arthur James BEAN in 1907.
Millie Ruth married Frederick Augustus SMITH in 1910, they may have lived in London.
Thomas William married Kate WOOLSTON in 1907, they lived at Ormesby. After Kate's death Thomas William married Gertrude Emma, widow of his brother Frederick John.
Alice Rebecca married Frank Leonard LEATH in 1912.
Others are known to have moved away from Norfolk:
Edward Arthur, Jean Novotny's grandfather, married his cousin Sarah CHUBBOCK at Nebraska, USA in 1911. They had five children and lived in Iowa.
Florence Mary is not believed to have married, she registered the death of her father in 1920 and was probably then living in London or Surrey.
My aunt told me of the marriages of the siblings closest in age to my grandmother:
Anna Rachel married Albert CONNOLLEY in 1923, probably in Cambridgeshire. They may just have been working there for a while, they are not known to have had any children. Doll (Anna Rachel) lived at Ormesby in the mid 1900s.
Dorothy Grace married Albert WILLIAMSON in 1931, they moved to Wales and had two daughters.
Reginald James married Yvonne Muriel Edith BACON in 1954. Jim married late in life after working as a missionary in Africa, he later became a parish priest in England and officiated at my parents' marriage in 1951. Jim and Yvonne had two children.
Several other Internet contacts have revealed what became of three more:
Frank Charles married Ellen WARD, they may have lived at Lowestoft, Suffolk.
Frederick John married Gertrude Emma SALES in 1920 and lived at Ormesby. After the death of her husband Gertie married his widowed brother Thomas William Dyball in 1953.
Redvers Bertie moved to Quebec, Canada and married Catherine Brown MacBAIN. They had two sons who had two children each. I have been contacted by a grandson of Redvers and by one of his great-grandsons.

Charles William Dyball (1858-1920) was the second child of Thomas Dyball (1831-1909) and Maria KERRISON (1835-1909) who married at Martham in 1856. Thomas was a farmer and he and Maria had 14 children, these were also born at about 15 month intervals. The children were: Anna Maria, Charles William, George Humphrey, Thomas Henry, James Albert, John Walter, Edward Arthur, Alice Sophia, Humphrey Robert, Christianna Elizabeth, Samuel Jacob, Edgar Ernest, Obadiah Oliver and Naomi Leah. George, James, John, Edward and Naomi are known to have married and had children. The fate of the rest is unknown. Research is hampered because all the parish registers for Martham are still held at the church.

Thomas Dyball (1831-1909) was born at West Somerton but the Dyballs moved to Martham by 1851. Thomas was the third known child of Humphrey Dyball (1795-1883) and Christiana REED (1797-1878) who married at Great Yarmouth in 1822. Humphrey was a farmer with small amounts of land at West Somerton and Martham. He and Christiana (known as Crissa) had at least six children. Their oldest son Humphrey (1826-?) married Martha STARKINGS (aunt of Hannah Maria Starkings above) in 1849. Marriages are known for three of their other children: Sarah married John GYMER in 1850, William Robert married Mary Ann HOWLETT in 1865 and Hannah married John FELMINGHAM in 1861.

Humphrey Dyball (1795-1883) was born at West Somerton, the eldest son of Humphrey Dyball (1769-1850) and Elizabeth SADLER who married there in 1794. They had at least four other children. All these four are known to have married: William to Elizabeth and had at least six children; John to Mary ROGERS in 1825 - they had children at Winterton; James to Mary Ann SADLER in 1830 and Emma DACK in 1869 - they remained at West Somerton; Hannah married Thomas OLLEY in 1839. I am in contact with Mark Dyball, a descendant of John and Mary [ROGERS].

Humphrey Dyball senior (1769-1850) was born at Winterton in 1769, the son of yet another Humphrey (1723-?) and Elizabeth SHREEVE (?-1805?) who married there in 1761. This Humphrey and Elizabeth had at least seven more children. Their oldest child, John, married Ann SWASH, these are the ancestors of John Taylor of Perth, Australia.
This Humphrey (1723-?) had previously been married to another Elizabeth (yes it is very confusing!). This was Elizabeth ARTIS (?-1758) and they married at Acle in 1742. They had six children at Winterton.
Humphrey (1723-?) was the son of Humphrey and Judith STEELS who married at Winterton in 1711. At last a non-Elizabeth! Humphrey and Judith had at least two other children at Winterton.
A baptism for the Humphrey who married Judith has not been found.
