KERRISON

One of my paternal great-great-grandmothers was Maria Kerrison (1835-1909). She was born at Martham, the second of the two daughters born to George Kerrison (1807-71+) and Mary Ann (1810?-71+).

Maria Kerrison (1835-1909) married Thomas DYBALL (1831-1909) at Martham in 1856. They had at least 14 children at about 15 month intervals.

George Kerrison (1807-71+) and Mary Ann only seem to have had two daughters: Mary Ann and Maria. Mary Ann senior's maiden name is not yet known, she was born at Potter Heigham in about 1810, her age in the censuses varies wildly. George Kerrison worked as a gardener at Martham. Both George and Mary Ann senior appear in the 1871 census but not in that for 1881. The fate of Mary Ann Kerrison junior is unknown, she was still unmarried in 1861 at the age of 28 and worked as a dressmaker.

George Kerrison (1807-71+) was the third child of George Kerrison and Sarah SUTTON (1781-?). George Kerrison senior and Sarah married at Hemsby in 1802 and had eight children at Martham. They do not appear in the 1841 census at Martham so they probably died before then. Three other sons of George and Sarah: Jacob; Henry and James, married and the last two had families at Martham. One of James's daughters, Caroline, married Elijah KIRBY. Elijah was the brother of Martha who married John STARKINGS (1855-90), one of my co-descendants. I have a snail-mail contact who is interested in the Kirbys.

George Kerrison senior's ancestry is not yet known. There were many Kerrisons at Martham and in the surrounding area, I expect to find that plenty of them were related when I conduct research in Norfolk. A Mark Kerrison was the local shoemaker and the wife of the owner of Martham Hall was an Emily Kerrison. As yet I have no contacts for my Kerrison line.
