Abingdon Amblers Athletic club is
a small but friendly group of runners. As with most running clubs the emphasis
is firmly on the enjoyment side of running. Nobody is asked or expected
to do anything that is beyond their capabilities. New runners/club members
are always, where possible, paired with a runner of similar ability, until
such time as they feel confident with both the routes of the runs in and
around the Abingdon area or are confident enough to run on their own. Throughout
the year the club holds some social events where the emphasis is firmly
on the social side of running rather than the physical!!
Annual Subscription. Seniors £10 per year. £2.32 per Thursday track session (which includes the use of the club and shower facilities at Tilsley Park, prices are slightly cheaper during the summer months). Juniors £3 per year £1.55 junior rates per session for use of Tilsley Park facilities. Tilsley Park offer a season ticket which enables the holder to free use of the facilities (track), contact Tilsley Park for further details. Tilsley Park, Dunmore Road, Abingdon OX14 1PU. Telephone 01235 536653. Where and when we meet. Tuesday, At Tilsley Park, Dunmore Road, Abingdon OX14 1PU. The run begins at 1900 (or 7 p.m. in old money), but be there before as club announcements precede the start of the run. There are usually three types of Tuesday evening runs; short, medium and long. The runs range from four to eight miles in length. Thursday. At Tilsley Park (same directions as Tuesday). These are our regular track sessions and are taken by one of the club coaches. Each session begins at around 1900. All sessions start with a good warm-up prior to beginning each session. The last Thursday of each month is usually taken up with a 1500m ‘Time Trial’. As with all sessions on a Thursday the amount of effort involved is entirely up to you. You will not be asked to do anything that you are not comfortable with. Sunday. Sunday ‘long’ runs only now take
place if there are enough members to support it. Most members prefer to
do their own thing with regards to long runs. However, there are usually
more than enough people willing to join in if someone is prepared to organise
a route and a place to start/finish. As with a lot of clubs, long run fever
usually reaches a peak between January and April in order to accommodate
the training needs for the London Marathon.
