The Hazard Perception Test

The hazard perception test forms the second element of a two part Theory Test and is taken after the 35 multiple choice question test. It takes about 15 minutes. Candidates are given the option of a three minute break between the multiple choice test and the hazard perception test. The hazard perception test begins with a tutorial video, which uses example footage and a voice over facility to explain how to complete the test. Candidates wear headphones to listen to the voice over.

The test itself consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about a minute. There is a ten second gap between each clip. The clips feature various types of hazard, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. As soon as a pedestrian sees a hazard developing that may result in the driver having to take action, the candidate should respond by pressing the mouse button. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted and a response made with the mouse button, the higher the score. Candidates can score up to five marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 markable hazards spread over the 14 clips.
