The Theory Test

All driving test candidates must pass a separate theory test, as well as the practical driving test, before qualifying for a full driving licence.

Safer Drivers

Inexperienced drivers are more likely to have an accident. For example, young drivers make up only 10% of licence holders, but are involved in 20% of all incidents. The theory test is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified drivers by making them think carefully about the right attitudes needed to drive safely on todays busy roads.

The Test

There will be 35 questions to answer. The questions will be multiple choice and will range from knowledge of the rules to their practical application. Areas to be assessed will include: driver attitude, traffic signs and regulations, effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on driver behaviour, safety and environmental aspects of vehicles. The pass mark is 30 and you will be told your score the same day as your test.

In March 1996 all the theory questions were published by the HMSO in a book called 'The official Theory Test for car drivers.' It was written by the Driving Standards Agency and is available from all good bookshops. You will struggle to pass the theory test without fully studying this book.

Since January 1997 you must pass the Theory Test before a booking will be accepted for the 'Practical Driving Test.' However, you can still learn to drive whilst studying for the Theory Test.

The nearest Theory Test centre is in Milton Keynes. Once you have passed the 'Theory Test', you will have two years to pass the 'Practical Driving Test.' Failure to gain your licence in this period means you will have to re-sit the Theory Test again.

Giffard Park Driving School assist you with your Theory Test through mock papers, help and support as and when you need it.
