on to Year 2

Year 1, Month 1
1st, 2nd and 3rd Survey Fleets probe the three gravitic anomalies in the Haggis system. Two lead to starless areas that are named Antelope and Bear, but the other drops the Surveyor class frigate in a binary star system. Two habitable planets are noted and no sentient life is found on either. The system is named Ark. All three survey fleets enter their WPs and begin survey operations in earnest. The Surveyor class frigates in 1st Survey Fleet close in on the habitable worlds and assess their usefulness. The larger, less hospitable world is named Samson due to it's power and is rich in exploitable resources, whilst the smaller, friendlier world is named Greta in honour of the Queen. It is found to be very rich in mineral wealth and has a climate that is quite similar to homeworld. Colonisation efforts will begin immediately. Neither planet has any creature apparently more intelligent than an ape despite thriving biospheres, and debate about extra-Haggi intelligence is sparked off again, although none doubt that a species superior to felines will never be found.
Due to the drain on the budget that is expected from building our domain, some of the Home Fleet under Great Fang Haggis is placed in mothballs. The populace is assured that this is a temporary measure and that the fleet is fully capable of protecting them from any hostile aliens that we encounter.

Year 1, Month 2
The first settlers leave Haggis for the new frontiers. Six additional Whisker scouts are ordered. Industrial expansion and surveying continue.

Year 1, Month 3
More settlers are dispatched to the Ark system. The newly constructed scouts join 1st Survey in Ark and six more are laid down. Further finances are put into expanding our industrial capacity.

Year 1, Month 4
As further colonists arrive in Ark, the survey fleets complete their rough surveys of the new systems. No more WPs are found in Antelope, but one is located in Bear. Surveyor 03 probes the point while the rest of 2nd Survey commences a more detailed study. A single orange star is discovered with a cluster of lifeless planets. Least Claw Bono in Surveyor 03 names the system Platypus and rejoins 2nd Survey in Antelope. 1st Survey finds one more WP in Ark and Surveyor 01 makes its second first transit. A single yellow star is found and another super-terrestoid planet is spotted. After naming the system Elephant, Small Fang Twang moves her ship in for a closer look and is shocked to discover a primitive civilisation on the planet. This proves many scientists to be correct that sentient life is not limited to Haggis. Following standard orders, Twang sends down a first contact party. The aliens appear almost worshipful, but the first party is unable to understand them. Surveyor 01 returns to Ark and a Whisker scout is immediately dispatched to homeworld with the news, and a request for warship support for all survey fleets as cover for a "worst case" scenario. Twang then takes her ship back to the alien homeworld and will attempt further communication next month.
The new scouts have joined 1st Survey again and a further six have been laid down. After consultation on Twang's request, a Javelin and two Attack ships are sent to each survey fleet. This leaves Home Fleet dangerously under strength and Great Fang Haggis requests more ships. First Fang Ishtar-har manages to gain limited funds from the Queen for de-mothballing of ships. Two Attack corvettes will be re-activated next month, and two more the month after.
Our scientists report that progress in several new technological areas seems to be bearing fruit. They hope to improve the economic and technical potential of the Confederation in only a few more months. In the meantime, industrial expansion continues.

Year 1, Month 5
Surveying, colonisation and industrial expansion continue. Two Attack ships are reactivated and six more Whisker scouts are ordered. In Elephant, contact teams manage to gain partial communication with the primitives, who continue to bring gifts to all meetings. Towards the end of the month 1st Survey completes the detailed survey of Ark and two more WPs are discovered. These new avenues of expansion will be probed next month.

Year 1, Month 6
Normal activity continues. Six more Whiskers are ordered and the other two Attack ships are brought out of mothballs. Twang's contact teams fail to make any further progress, but report that the natives are being very deferential and have continued to treat the whole team almost royally. Probes of the WPs in Ark reveal two systems that have no habitable worlds. They are named Fox and Giraffe, and 1st Survey moves into Giraffe and commences operations.

Year 1, Month 7
Our colony on Greta continues to grow, along with the industrial might of the Confederation. Communication attempts with the aliens are still proving frustratingly difficult, yet the aliens themselves continue to try hard and we have managed to determine that they call themselves the Kimato.

2nd and 3rd Survey complete detailed studies of Antelope and Bear, finding no WPs in Antelope which has proved to be a dead end system. One additional point is found in Bear, and Least Claw Bono probes it in Surveyor 03. A binary star system is on the other side which he names Horse. He proceeds in-system and is profoundly shocked when two alien destroyers and frigates intercept him short of the large, habitable world orbiting the primary star. The ships are obviously armed, but fortunately attempt to communicate. Some initial traffic is exchanged and a basic understanding is achieved. When he doesn't return to Bear, Least Claw Runtipole despatches a Whisker through the WP with orders to return immediately if it can. When the Whisker transits safely back, Runtipole assumes that Bono is either destroyed or negotiating with an alien race. Fortunately the WP is closed, so the aliens will only be able to find our entry point if led back by Bono, or if they capture his ship and database. Runtipole despatches a Whisker back to homeworld and moves his warships into position around the WP in case the aliens prove hostile. The lack of any long-range communications method is noted in his report. When our technology level improves we may be able to do something about this.

Year 1, Month 8
More colonists embark for the Ark system. Having to assume the worst, Great Claw Haggis will lead Home Fleet to the Bear system and picket the WP in strength. If the aliens prove hostile, he will give them a most unpleasant reception. Additional warships are laid down and two Javelin destroyers are reactivated. Our researchers report that they are close to a general breakthrough, which would indeed be welcome if fighting breaks out. No further progress is made in attempts to communicate with the Kimato. Least Claw Bono continues his lone communication attempts with the aliens, but makes no further progress. He will be forced to break off eventually when his maintenance situation becomes critical, but will stay as long as he can to allow us to build up defences.
3rd Survey moves to the Fox system and commences operations. 2nd Survey gives up its escorting warships to Home Fleet and moves back through the Haggis system to Elephant, where it begins surveying as the primitive Kimato have no way to detect the presence of our ships.

Year 1, Month 9
Two more Javelin destroyers are de-mothballed and three more Attack ships are laid down. Surveying continues and more colonists move in to the Ark system. No progress is made in communications with the Kimato, but Bono succeeds in establishing partial communication with the aliens, who call themselves the Elbonian Regime.

Year 1, Month 10
Scientists have achieved several breakthroughs and our general economic and tech level has gone up. Several new devices have been suggested and research in to the Courier Drone and External Ordnance Rack commences.
We have still not managed to expand communication with the Kimato, but Bono succeeds in establishing full communications with the Elbonians. He immediately offers them a Trade deal, but in his haste he unknowingly issues an unforgivable insult to the Elbonian race. The nearby warships immediately attack and the unarmed Surveyor 03 is blown into tiny pieces along with its startled captain.
1st Survey completes a rough survey of Giraffe finding three WPs. These are probed finding a twin blue giant system named Iguana, a single star system which is named Reindeer and has one uninhabited type T planet, and a binary system with three habitable planets, one of which is home to a primitive race. 1st Survey moves into this system and commences surveying. A landing party goes down to the planet, but is forced to withdraw with some casualties as the aliens attack them with all weapons at their disposal. Least Claw Borghal is horrified and immediately dispatches a Whisker back to homeworld with news. These primitives will pay for their unprovoked attack!
2nd Survey completes a rough survey of Elephant, finding no new WPs. Over in Fox, 3rd Survey also completes a rough survey, finding two additional WPs. These are probed, resulting in a binary system named Walrus with two habitable planets, and a system with a primitive race occupying the sole habitable planet. No contact is attempted and 3rd Survey moves into Walrus and commences work.

Year 1, Month 11
Research begins into the Standard Missile. There is still no further progress with the Kimato.
Heavily armed survey parties complete the survey of the habitable worlds in the Polar Bear system. The aggressive alien's home planet is found to be very rich in minerals, the other ST world is unremarkable, and the type T planet is very poor in resources and has an extremely harsh climate. The Whisker sent to homeworld heads back with news that an invasion will be mounted imminently.
3rd Survey finds the two planets in Walrus to be Harsh/Normal and Benign/Rich. Colonisation efforts will commence next month.

Year 1, Month 12
A prototype warship 50% larger than our Javelin class is laid down alongside more new warships of existing design. Communication efforts with the Kimato have still not moved on.
The first colonists land in the Walrus system. They name their new home Aurora for it's spectacular natural phenomena of the same name.
Ground troops land on the ST world in the Polar Bear system. They obliterate enemy resistance in a matter of hours and we begin to consolidate our grip of the planet. 1st Survey completes a rough survey of the system, but in accordance with orders that arrived with the messenger Whisker, does not probe the single WP discovered. Our forces are rapidly becoming over-extended and that enjoins caution. The fleet begins the detailed survey instead. Similarly, 3rd Survey in Walrus discovers a WP after completing a rough survey, but does not probe it.
Great Claw Haggis concludes that Surveyor 03 must have been destroyed in the Horse system, for she would have had no choice but to return for lack of maintenance now. He prepares plans for an attack on the system to be performed as soon as enough ships have been accumulated.
