ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, WASPERTON
A SANCTUARY FOR WILDLIFE

Updated December 2023

If it freeze on St Thomas'
Day, the price of corn will
fall; if it be mild, the price
will rise.

The price of corn was measured as wheat being abundant or scarce in the following year's crop, but ratings are low in my book. Only 40%. Now St Thomas Day is the 21st December.

St Thomas grey, St Thomas grey.
The longest night and the
shortest day.

Yes we know that, it's a fact but regarding a frost on the 21st, I don't think it's unusual. On average the early winter storms continue into December till about the 14th. Quiet frosty weather occurs usually about the 18th to the 24th, with frequent South and East winds. The weather trend is, a change to storms bringing a post Christmas thaw 25th to 31st December. Well, we don't usually get a white Christmas do we?

The Churchyard has gone to bed really and looks pretty tidy at the moment thanks to our first class team. Our wildlife goes a bit quiet at the present, hibernation, the bats and hedgehogs of course. I did receive a very interesting report from Jane about the hedgehogs that visit her garden last month. One poor little chap had a lung infection, as it turned out. He was taken to a hedgehog hospital in Wellesbourne. I didn't know there was one. However he was put in intensive care and is making a good recovery. I think the worry is about survival through the winter as weak young hedgehogs often don't survive through. Fingers crossed!
