ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, WASPERTON Updated July 2024 Dog-days bright and clear The dog days are from the 3rd of July to the 11th August. During these forty days the dog star, Sirius rises and sets with the sun. The old country belief was that it added to the heat of the sun. Of course, it doesn't and from the statistics it has no effect on the weather. My book says there is no truth in this adage. so you never know we may have a hot spell in July. The usual weather pattern for July gives us a warm period from the 10th to the 24th. The last week of the month turning to thundery rain. In the Churchyard all the spring colours have gone, and I tend to think that "well that's the best time over". However the taller wildflowers are coming to their best, and the campion is well established. I do feel a bit disappointed as there are so few oxeye daisies and I spread a lot of seed last November. Ah well, you win some and lose plenty. We do have quite a few bats, spotted after the six o'clock service in Church. Sadly they don't seem to have used the bat boxes. (Cobwebs over the entrance slits) so I know we have spiders but no bats. They roost under the Church roof tiles. It would be good to know which bats we have and not just pipistrel. I think it may help to have a word with the Warwickshire Bat Group to ask if they can make a visit with their identification machines. Regarding our birds I have seen baby blue tits in the Churchyard, but I can't say which nest box was used and it may not have been in the Churchyard. Now I hope if you are on holiday this month, you have a super time and good weather. Keep walking through the churchyard when you are over this way. Thanks for your support. Mike Porter
