Post Menopausal Profile
The Post Menopausal Profile is a hormone test for women during or after the menopause.
The hormones include oestrogen and progesterone, and although it is recognised that there is a drop in the levels of circulating hormones, and the absence of a cycle, the hormones should remain balanced at a certain physiological level.
Problems with the menopause include symptoms such as hot flushes, irregular bleeding, various joint aches and pains, and a number of emotional symptoms.
This test is valuable it giving us information about the hormonal balance, which enables us to rationalise treatment in the best possible way.
Who Should Have the Test?
The test is available to all women during or after the menopause.
It would be particularly valuable for those with the following problems:
For those with any of these problems, then it could be argued that they should have the test every 12 - 24 months.
How Is It Done?
The Post Menopause Profile is carried out by collecting a small amount of saliva. A test kit is provided for you.
Seven samples are collected over a 6 day period, and these are then sent together in the post.
The Post Menopause Profile looks at a number of female hormones, such as oestrogen and progesterone, and as each sample is analysed separately, it is possible to build an accurate picture of the hormonal balance over a short period of 6 days,
This is particularly important as levels may well vary from day to day.
The results are available to us after around 14 21 days, and we usually arrange a follow-up appointment in a month to discuss your results. Alternatively results can be posted to you, or we can discuss them with you over the telephone.
How Accurate are the Results and What Do They Mean?
No test can be 100% accurate. This test is probably as accurate as any blood test, which is the conventionally accepted method of assessing hormone levels.
At Better Health we have always approached new treatments, new tests and new therapies with an analytical, scientific approach are they as good as they claim to be?
Currently available conventional tests on female hormone function are often misleading and incorrect. This is because many of the tests (but not all) do not look at the daily variation in hormone levels, but are a single blood test taken at a single day during the cycle.
Consequently most conventional tests fail to detect some female hormonal problems in the menopause.
What Advice Do You Get?
If the results are normal, then the female hormones are well balanced, and there is no need for any treatment. A follow up test would be advisable in 12 - 24 months.
If there are abnormalities in the hormone levels then we can recommend treatments to help. You may also need further assessment, with tests on other hormones, or nutritional status (vitamins and minerals) or others. These will be discussed fully with you.
Treatments advised by Better Health include various nutritional, herbal and homoeopathic medicines, and will depend very much on the results of the tests carried out.
How Much Does it Cost?
The current cost of the Post Menopause Profile is £135.A carriage charge will be additional for shipping to the laboratory.
Further charges apply for any further consultations, tests or treatments, and these will be discussed with you fully as necessary.
