The Drama Group’s annual Music Hall started in 1983 and was an attempt at the traditional Old Tyme Music Hall style of songs, sketches and singalongs, magic and specialist acts. One of the early shows was to raise money for the current permanent stage in the Memorial Hall. Prior to that we had to put up a distinctly rickety set of boards and supports on which to perform!

Since then Music Hall has raised just over £90,000 and this money has gone to help all sorts of charities and village groups including the Shop, School and Scout hut renewal.

In recent years the format has changed and it is now called “Not the Music Hall” but still has elements of the old, slightly smutty humour, ridiculous sketches, songs, novelty acts and fun. It is always performed in November and many of our sell-out audiences tell us it cheers them up no end and even sets them up for Christmas!

LORRAINE

“I joined the Drama group at 16 years old. I loved drama at school and had big ideas of being an actress!

It took a big leap of faith to walk into the drama group and ask if I could join, but now in my early forties and still a member, I clearly made the right decision! I always enjoyed singing and suddenly I had a stage to stand on. It is daunting and I still get nervous but I just love the adrenaline and the chance to perform. I love a bit of comedy and I’m always drawn to plays that make people laugh. I’ve even directed a play and Music Hall - not easy, definitely challenging but so rewarding.

I love how the drama group is integral to the village; our performances raise money for local projects & charities. The village hall is transformed when all the sound and lighting is switched on. We put our heart and soul into it! You don’t know what you’re missing if you’ve not yet seen one of our plays!

We are a friendly group and we would really welcome new members. I’m often walking around the village with my dog Tilly so stop me and ask me any questions if you’re interested in joining the BDG!”

WHY NOT CONSIDER BECOMING A MEMBER?

Each year, Barford Drama Group performs two full length plays, and the Music Hall in November. Some years we also take part in One Act Play Competitions. We have monthly business and activity meetings throughout the year, as well as running a number of social events.

You could join us as a performer, as a backstage hand or as a supporter. You will be very welcome in any of these roles but we particularly need people who are interested in working on lighting or sound.

The annual subscription is £10 for adults or £1 for students.
