MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF CONSTABLE:

The Message below from the Chief Constable of Warwickshire to Colleagues Is Now in the Public Domain and May Be Seen as a Summary of the Police’s View of Their Current Position.

Our performance on all fronts during 2007 was impressive. We solved six murders, responded to severe flooding across the county and began a major investigation into the fire at Atherstone on Stour.

Last month the Police Authority reported that we had achieved a 12 per cent reduction in recorded crime between April and November compared with the same period in 2006. That means 360 fewer homes were burgled, 1500 fewer cars were broken into or stolen and there were 600 fewer victims of criminal damage. We have taken seven of the drug dealers who cause most harm in our communities off the streets.

I have often said that being serious about delivering improved protection means ensuring that the public has trust and confidence in their police. I am pleased to say that the latest statistics show that overall public satisfaction has increased by five per cent.

These achievements were not delivered by blueprints or policies, but by officers, staff and volunteers throughout the force who believe in protecting our communities. Last year, more than 80 members of the force were nominated for awards, some local, some regional and some national. Some were for bravery, some for leadership, others for excellence. The good work of an individual or a team sometimes goes unrecognised but we know good work is being delivered. We know this because we have seen reductions in all areas of crime that, as a service, we told our Police Authority and our communities we would focus upon. We will continue to protect people from harm by managing the risks that people face and by concentrating on the most serious risks first. I am proud of what you have achieved and I am confident that, as a force, we will not stand still. We will continue to improve, to seek out new opportunities to be innovative and to challenge the way we deliver protection.

Thank you for all your hard work and commitment in 2007. I wish you all a happy, prosperous and very productive 2008.

Keith Bristow
Chief Constable

ONLINE NEWS :

All Warwickshire Police news and information is now released through an online service.

The new website went live on 1st February 2006. All news and appeals for information generated by Press Office staff are loaded directly onto the online news site.

The site is designed to provide regular updates to local, regional and national media as well as the public about everything making the news in Warwickshire. Another crucial role is to ensure appeals for witnesses and information, which are often vital to police inquiries, are made available to the media and public at the earliest opportunity.

CRIMESTOPPERS :

Join the Fight against Crime

Crime StoppersCrimestoppers operates across the UK to help identify, prevent, solve and reduce crime. This is primarily achieved through the freephone number 0800 555 111.

Members of the community can call this number anonymously with information about crime and criminal activity. No details are taken of the caller’s identity, the calls are not recorded or traced, the caller does not need to provide a statement or have to go to court. Crimestoppers are interested in what the caller knows, not who they are.

Rewards of up to £1,000 are available and are paid without compromising a caller’s anonymity. It’s a simple, secure service that allows the police to be put in the picture, without anyone knowing who provided the information.

The telephone number has provided a lifeline to people who have information that they want to share but feel at risk from retribution.

If there is anyone or anything in your area that doesn’t quite add up to the point that arouses your suspicion, don’t keep it to yourself – call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Please remember that Crimestoppers is not an emergency service and if you see a crime taking place you should ring 999 to report it immediately.

The Warwickshire Board is looking for new volunteer members. If you want to play your part in impacting on local crime and make your community safer, please contact me.
