THE DAZE 2001.
Dec. 31st 2001 At the point of maximum Lunar Eclipse yesterday (10-29 GMT ) the eclipsed Moon set and the Sun rose over Peru. Venus exactly rose at Lima opposite the eclipsed Moon and Jupiter and square the IC/MC axis. Lima was the scene of a fire that swept through a busy shopping area the previous evening in the Peruvian capital killing at least 220 people, officials say. In the aftermath of yesterday's eclipse the corresponding world news centres around Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Pakistani president says his country is prepared for war but wants peace, as India reports an exodus in disputed Kashmir. An agreement on the deployment of international peace keepers in Afghanistan is expected to be signed within the next two days. Today the Cancerian Moon opposes Mercury at 13-44 GMT then is void till she enters Leo at 22-10 GMT. The new year starts, in true 'over the top' manner as Jupiter is in opposition to the Sun (06-00 GMT Jan 1st 2002).
Dec. 30th 2001. The News:-At least 60 people are killed and many more injured and missing after a blaze in a fireworks store engulfs a shopping district in Lima. President Bush appeals to the leaders of India and Pakistan to calm tensions as both nations mass troops on their border. All the ministers in Argentina's week-old interim government offer their resignations following a night of violent protests.
Penumbral Eclipse of the Moon
(Conjunct Jupiter in Cancer) MAXIMUM ECLIPSE 10-29 GMT.
The Moon is closely conjunct Jupiter in Cancer, opposite the Sun and Venus in Capricorn. Mars square Pluto is the tightest planetary aspect at the time of this eclipse. This aspect was starting to apply at the Solar Eclipse on Dec. 14th 2001. Here it dominates. Also Saturn is trine Neptune. This aspect will greatly influence the coming season. The final event of the year is a deep penumbral lunar eclipse visible from much of the Western Hemisphere. First and last penumbral contacts occur at 08:25.5 UT and 12:33.2 UT, respectively. Greatest eclipse occurs at 10:29.3 UT with a maximum penumbral eclipse magnitude of 0.9190. Observers will note subtle yet distinct shading across the southern portions of the Moon. The Moon's southern limb actually lies 3.5 arc-minutes north of the umbra at its closest approach.
The Saros Series to which this eclipse belongs (series 144) started on 29th July 1749 at 16-31. The chart of this moment is here. We see a Full Moon in Aquarius. A massive watery trine exists involving Jupiter Neptune and Pluto. A fixed T-square with Venus tightly opposing Uranus squaring Saturn, confers on this series a potentially difficult mesh of energies. This Saros series is still in its infancy. It 'goes Partial' on March 28th 2146, and it 'goes total' on 4th July 2308.

As a lunar occultation of Saturn occurs the news reports say that America has expressed its concerns to India and Pakistan about growing border tensions. This seems to be the current 'flash point'. The Moon is now heavily gibbeous in Gemini conjunct Saturn and then going on to square Mars and opposing Pluto. A diificult day epitamising much of what is difficult in the world right now. As the eclipse approaches we have a day tomorrow with the Moon entering Cancer at 19-41.

Two astrological appointments are at hand. One is another lunar occultation of Saturn 07-55 GMT on Friday 28th 2001, visible from America (see map below). The other occurs on Sunday 30th December 2001, when a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse occurs conjunct Jupiter, maximum eclipse occurring at 10-29. The eclipse starts at 08-25 and finishes at 12-33 on that day. As these events draw nigh, in the world we hear that India bans Pakistan's airline from its airspace and drastically downgrades diplomatic links as fears intensify of a serious conflict.

On Christmas Day 2001 the News reports told of firefighters battling blazes in New South Wales, some of which threaten the outskirts of Sydney, as hundreds are evacuated. The Indian army has started evacuating villagers from its side of the border with Pakistan as tension between the two nuclear powers continued to escalate. Both countries have moved extra troops and equipment towards the border and the cease-fire line that divides the province of Kashmir.
Venus enters Capricorn today at 07-25, the Moon continues to wax in Taurus, (applying to another occultation with Saturn 07-55 GMT on Friday 28th 2001, visible from America, a pre-eclipse hot spot.), becoming gibbous in pre-eclipse agitation from 20-42 GMT today as we approach to Sunday's eclipse. Mars is square to the Saturn Pluto opposition. The astrological vibration renders us 'earthed in' and 'hooked in' to the moment as we are energised by the foreshadow of these impending events.
Tuesday December 25th 2001.
The Moon enters Taurus 06-13 GMT today. The next astrological event occurs on Sunday 30th December 2001, when a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse occurs conjunct Jupiter, maximum eclipse occurring at 10-29. The eclipse starts at 08-25 and finishes at 12-33 on that day.
Between now and then there are no planetary aspects peaking, instead we have the slow build up of a Mars square Pluto aspect which peaks at 18-49 GMT on the day of the eclipse.
The Moon becomes gibbous in pre-eclipse agitation from 20-42 GMT on Wednesday Dec. 26th 2001. We now witness world events corresponding in to this eclipse season. The Palestinian leader denounces Israel's ban on his annual Christmas visit to Bethlehem, as the symbolic Mass is held without him. The man suspected of trying to blow up a transatlantic flight with explosives hidden in his shoes makes his first US court appearance. Controversial northern warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum is named deputy defence minister, suggesting the new government has his backing.

The man who accused of trying to detonate explosives in his shoe on a transatlantic flight will appear in a Boston court on Monday morning. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat says he will attend Christmas festivities in Bethlehem as usual, despite an Israeli ban. Newly installed interim President Adolfo Rodriguez Saa hopes for a positive reaction to his planned halt to debt repayments. Tony Blair is urged to end speculation over whether his son Leo has had the MMR vaccine, after giving a clear that he has.

The FBI questions a man who was discovered on an American Airlines flight trying to detonate explosives packed into his shoe. A day after being sworn-in Afghanistan's new government begins its first meeting, with reconstruction at the top of the agenda. Argentina's deputies meet to approve an interim president, but the session gets bogged down in procedural debate. The are rumours of war preparations between India and Pakistan.

This Solstice occurs between a Solar Eclipse (Dec. 14th) and a Lunar Eclipse (Dec. 30th). The crescent Moon in Pisces is gaining in light and in motion, she separates from a recent Mars conjunction. A mutable T-square involving Mars, Pluto and Saturn is tightening. Mercury is in very tight sextile to Mars (this forms a finger of fate with the rising degree at London). In the immediate aftermath of yesterday's solar eclipse US special forces and Afghan allies are engaged in a pitched battle to oust al-Qaeda fighters from caves in the Tora Bora mountains. Israeli jets bomb Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's HQ, (the eclipse was conjunct Arafat's natal Saturn) for the third night as Palestinian militants vow to continue suicide attacks. A big and bright near-Earth asteroid will glide by our planet on Dec. 16th within easy range of powerful radars and backyard telescopes. As Mercury yesterday was conjunct with Pluto in Sagittarius, Afghanistan's former rulers agreed to hand over their last stronghold, Kandahar, as the US stood firm against any amnesty for leader Mullah Omar. The Taleban have surrendered. Also at the same time, news was released that a group of brain cartographers is creating the most detailed and sophisticated computer atlas of the human brain ever assembled. Very much in keeping with the symbolism connected with Mercury conjunct Pluto, probing the workings of the mind/brain. Brain scans of 7,000 healthy individuals from nine different countries, representing a cross section of the global population, are being put together.

The Moon is void of course in Cancer until 14-16 GMT today when she enters Leo, adding more 'Fire' to the astrological flavour of this current time. Now we are in the wake of the Full Moon. On Monday and Tuesday the Sun and Mercury are opposite Saturn. This is the immediate planetary pattern before us. The symbolism associated with this combination of energies is a testing situation of practical thought and aspirational resolution. With the passing of this Full Moon we are now in an eclipse season. This is a period of time lasting approximately five weeks and covering an annular eclipse of the Sun in Sagittarius on December 14th 2001 and a deep penumbral eclipse of the Moon in Cancer on December 30th. The manifestations occurring during this period are by definition focused on change. A realignment of events, circumstances and perceptions may well occur.

The entry into the theatre of war in Afghanistan of 1000 US marines on Monday coincided with a conjunction of Mars and Uranus. The other dominant issues at that time were the human cloning claim by a US firm, and massive slaughter after a Taleban prisioner revolt in Afghanistan. The Mood on Monday was urgent and explosive. It is now more concrete, real, brutal. The Moon is gibbous in Taurus. Today the Sun makes a brief waning positive sextile to Neptune. Only a handful of Taliban prisoners are continuing a stand-off at a jail near the Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif as Northern Alliance fighters -- aided by U.S. and British special forces -- battle to contain the uprising, the Pentagon says. Afghan factions at landmark talks in Germany set a timetable for the formation of a broad-based transitional government. Thursday sees the Moon burgeoning to the full, squaring the Mars Uranus conjunction.

The Moon is waxing in Aries, becoming gibbous in phase at Midnight. Mercury enters Sagittarius 18-24 GMT today, Mars is conjunct Uranus 19-08 . This week sees a very fiery and explosive start today. The Taleban appears to have lost control of the northern Afghan city of Kunduz as alliance forces close in from the east and west. A US firm says it has cloned a human embryo as a source for stem cells which could be used to treat diseases from diabetes to Aids.

Today as the Mars Uranus conjunction (exact on Monday) begins to tighten and sharpen, both planets squaring Venus, the News stories from Afghanistan report that The Northern Alliance has made further gains around Kunduz, and diplomatic efforts to prevent a massacre in the city are being stepped up. In the very troubled Middle East the militant Islamic group Hamas says it will take revenge for the killing of Mahmoud Abu Hanoud, one its senior military leaders. The Moon today is just past first quarter phase in Pisces, there may be, for this day only, a slipstream of peace to be found amid the impending and threatening conjunction of Mars and Uranus on Monday.

The waxing Moon is in Pisces. Venus is in fixed square aspect to Mars (16-43 GMT today). There is trouble in the camp? Conflict in relationships? Imbalance between the sexes? Today has a strange quality, there is movement, change, dispersion, transmission, and bad timing. An awkwardness prevails. On the world stage the scene is set for possible bloody combat in southern Afghanistan. There is also rumour of conflict between US and UK on the Afghan war policy. There is, in the UK, rumour of conflict between chancellor and prime minister.
On Saturday Venus squares Uranus, on Monday next Mars conjuncts Uranus. The Full Moon in Gemini is on November 30th and occurs as the Moon occults Saturn. All this astrological and astronomical detail may well indicate a brief time ahead of severe and intense events.
Wednesday November 21st 2001.
This is the last day of the astrological month of Scorpio. The Sun enters Sagittarius tomorrow at 06-01 GMT. The Moon today is in Aquarius approaching first quarter phase shortly before midnight tomorrow. She passes close to Mars today at 21-02. (See star map above). Essentially two planetary events are taking place over the next six days. Venus makes hard square aspects with Mars and Uranus before the weekend, and Mars is building to a potentially explosive conjunction with Uranus exact next Monday.
The next occultation of Saturn occurs on December 1st 2001. It will also be visible from the UK, at the time of the next Full Moon, and the start an eclipse season. This particular Full moon conjunct Saturn (in occultation) looks very interesting.

Sky watchers across the globe are awaiting the climax of what could be the best meteor shower to strike the Earth in decades.
Sunday's news reported that Taliban fighters in the Afghan city of Konduz, surrounded by 30,000 Northern Alliance troops, were killing themselves rather than give themselves up, under the Capricorn Moon. Members of the US-led coalition in Afghanistan believe Osama Bin Laden will soon be tracked down.

New measurements of neutrinos, ghostly subatomic particles that hardly interact with anything, indicate a discrepancy between predictions of their behaviour and the way they actually behave.
In the skies we await the annual Leonid Meteor Shower this weekend. A new analysis of past Leonid activity suggests that this weekend's much-anticipated event may bring sky watchers in North America their most dramatic meteor "storm" in 35 years. This last-minute prediction comes from meteor specialist Peter Jenniskens (SETI Institute and NASA/Ames Research Center).

US President George W Bush and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have begun talks in Washington as ties between the former Cold War foes grow ever warmer. The Moon is old in Libra, entering Scorpio at 15-46 today. The Sun is square Uranus, Venus is square Neptune. As expected there is suddenly a tale of strange, confusing and upsetting events.
Yesterday an American Airlines passenger jet crashed near New York's John F Kennedy airport, killing all 255 people on board and leaving an unknown number of casualties on the ground. Flight 587 was bound for the Dominican Republic when it lost an engine and nose-dived into the Rockaway Beach residential area of the borough of Queens four minutes after taking off from JFK at 0913 local time (1413 GMT). At the time of the crash there was globally a 'Kite Planetary Pattern', involving Mars, Saturn and the Moon, in air signs focused once again on the current Saturn Pluto opposition. The Midpoint of the Venus square Neptune aspect is conjunct the Ascendant. Mars is trine Saturn, their midpoint is on the MC/IC axis. The reports are that this was an accident. It is odd that New York is again involved, almost two months to the day. It is a strange and upsetting incident.
On the other side of the planet there have been marked accelerations in the development and progress of the war in Afghanistan. Northern Alliance forces have advanced to within six kilometres of the capital.
Today the balsamic Moon is in Libra. Planetary aspects a plenty immediately ahead of us. Today a smooth wave is building up to a notably strange day tomorrow. On Tuesday the Sun is in fixed waning square to Uranus and Venus is also in identical square aspect to Neptune.

As the effects of this weekend's Mercury Square Neptune ripple out, the News from Afghanistan reports the Northern Alliance capturing several key towns in northern Afghanistan. Reports indicate the troops are at the gates of Kabul. British troops have been deployed on the ground in Afghanistan, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon confirms to the BBC. Elsewhere in the world the Algerian Government adopts a crisis plan to deal with the worst floods in living memory in which more than 300 people have been killed. The World Trade Organisation has unanimously approved the admission of Taiwan - just one day after China was admitted. Pakistan has offered to hold talks with India to discuss way of reducing tensions between the neighbouring nuclear powers.
The next occultation of Saturn occurs on December 1st 2001. It will also be visible from the UK, at the time of the next Full Moon, and the start an eclipse season. This particular Full moon conjunct Saturn (in occultation) looks very interesting.

Mars at that time is exactly conjunct Saturn from the helio perspective. From the Earth view the opposition has three peaks which can be considered to be 'echoes' before and after in time of the helio opposition, on August 5th 2001, November 2nd 2001 and May 26th 2002. This whole time period marks a period of difficult climax to the current Saturn Pluto cycle which started with their conjunction in August 1982 (in Libra). Previous cycles started in 1947, in Leo, and 1914-1915 (a triple conjunction at the time of the start of the first world war) in Cancer. News stories yesterday continued to be rather 'weak' in comparison to recent events. Yesterday the US president told East European leaders that Osama Bin Laden is seeking to acquire nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Anthrax was found in mail sent to a US consulate in Russia's Urals region, hours after a case is confirmed in Pakistan. The US Federal Reserve lowered interest rates 0.5%, its 10th cut this year, in a bid to kick-start the weary US economy. David Trimble was finally re-elected as Northern Ireland's first minister, sparking scuffles outside the assembly chamber.

The Cancerian moon conjuncts Jupiter today at 07-32, and then rolls on to a long application to waning cardinal square aspects with Venus and Mercury tomorrow. We have a momentary lull in News stories as this waning moon rolls through Cancer. Astrologically we are now in rather a quiet period. The news reels report that Northern Alliance troops are rallying on the plains north of Kabul as new allied air strikes rattle the Afghan capital and the southern city of Kandahar. Soldiers are put on a live-fire display featuring tanks, armoured personnel carriers and mobile rocket launchers. Anthrax scares ripple on as officials close a civilian post office within the Pentagon complex after the discovery of the virus traces over the weekend.

The main news in the world reports that hundreds of thousands of Cubans are evacuated as Hurricane Michelle bears down on the island after battering Central America. The American defenso secretary turns down Pakistan's call to stop bombing Afghanistan during the Muslim holy month. The Moon, while in Gemini, is drawing to an occultation of Saturn, visible from the UK tonight.
It is well to remember the significance of the current 'cluster' of Saturn occultations. The one on 10th September 2001, visible from North America occurred on the day before the Twin Towers destruction in New York. The last one on October 7th 2001 and coincided exactly with the start of the US attack on Afghanistan. It was visible from Eastern Asia (including Afghanistan). This one today is visible from Europe including the UK. Depending on your location the occultation will start around 21-00 GMT on November 3rd and will end one hour later. Later on in the night (GMT) the Moon occults a star Iota Tau around 04-34 tomorrow November 4th.
The next occultation of Saturn occurs on December 1st 2001. It will also be visible from the UK, and it will occur higher in the UK skies and last longer. The 'strength' of these occultations is currently increasing.
As the occultation approaches the news reports tell us that US special forces are airlifted to safety after their helicopter crashes in Afghanistan as bad weather hampers operations against the Taleban. Urgent attempts are underway to save power-sharing government in Northern Ireland before a deadline of midnight on Saturday, and the US Defense Secretary is visiting Russia and Central Asia to bolster support for the US-led military campaign against the Taleban.

U.S. intelligence sources receive information about a new, credible domestic terrorism threat against the United States. Officials say they do not know what the target may be but called on police and the public to be "extremely vigilant". US shares slide as consumer confidence plunges to a seven-year low, while London's FTSE 100 closes near the crucial 5,000 mark.
These events occur as the Moon draws to the Full. She enters Taurus today at 12-48 GMT and is full at 05-41 GMT tomorrow November 1st 2001. The Full Moon is three degrees from a conjunction from the UK (1801) National Chart Mars, and she forms a Fixed T-square with a conjunction of Mars and Neptune. The Gibbous Moon enters Aries 02-15 GMT today. The Sun is in fixed waning square to Neptune 09-31 GMT. Mercury and Venus are conjunct tomorrow both opposite the Moon. Today has the potential to be furious and blind. Its not all difficult, there exists this week in the skies an airy kite which involves Uranus in Aquarius, Saturn in Gemini and the Mercury/Venus conjunction in Libra. The opposition of Saturn and Pluto is the focus of the kite, but there is opportunity for transformations in communication and understanding.

Nine villagers die near the front line north of Kabul when a US missile goes astray, as the opposition calls for greater American efforts. At least 15 worshippers are shot dead by gunmen at a Roman Catholic church in the eastern town of Bahawalpur. Today the Gibbous Moon is void in Pisces. A day potentially of deep contemplation. Mars entered Aquarius yesterday. The next few days build up to the Full Moon, Mercury Venus long conjunction, the Saturn occultation and the Saturn Pluto opposition. These are deeply important days.

Military strikes hit targets in Kabul, Afghanistan, as jets pounded hills around the city and the airport, according to reports. The latest round of bombings comes after the Pentagon admits it accidentally hit several Red Cross warehouses.
The five major News stories this last week which may be considered to encapsulate the times we are living through and involved with, are 1) the continuing War in Afghanistan, 2) the continuing Anthrax attacks in the US, 3) the Israeli incursions into Palestine, and in the UK, 4) the start of the IRA decommissioning of arms and 5) the reclassification of the law on Cannabis. These events occur at a time when Saturn is opposite Pluto, in the skies of Earth, and Saturn itself is undergoing a series of monthly occultations by the Moon. The next such occultation is on Saturday 3rd November 2001, visible from the UK.
In addition to the heavy opposition and accompanying occultations there is another planetary event taking place, Mercury and Venus are within a degree of each other for the next ten days, presently in Libra. The IRA has said it has put some weapons "beyond use" in what will be widely seen as an historic breakthrough for the Northern Ireland peace process. Thirteen confirmed Anthrax cases now exist in the US. In the UK we await the first. The war in Afghanistan continues even after a Red Cross warehouse in northern Kabul was hit yesterday in a US strike - the second aid agency to be struck by a stray bomb.

The old Moon conjuncts Mercury today at 10-32 GMT. The New Moon in Libra occurs nine hours later at 19-23 GMT. This is the penultimate New Moon before the Annular Solar Eclipse on December 14th 2001. The significant factor for UK citizens is the fact that Saturn is exactly rising over the country (opposite Pluto) at the exact moment of New Moon. It is not suprising therefore that we hear that wide-ranging emergency measures aimed at tackling terrorism are unveiled by the UK home secretary and the chancellor. As day time bombing continues on Afghanistan we hear yesterday that India shelled Pakistani military positions in the disputed territory of Kashmir as the US Secretary of State arrived in Pakistan. Anthrax scares continue as staff at US Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle's office are treated for the disease after opening a letter containing spores.
Sunday October 14th 2001 As I write the Sun and Mercury (at inferior conjunction ) are square Mars and trined Uranus. World News as these planetary aspects form and subside speaks of Osama Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network threatening fresh terror attacks against the US and Britain, the White House says it is "propaganda". US air strikes on Afghanistan continue after the Pentagon concedes that a bomb dropped on Kabul hit a residential neighbourhood. A letter addressed to a company in Nevada tests positive for exposure to anthrax, stoking further fears about the disease in the US.
The old Moon conjuncts Venus 04-52 tomorrow, and both bodies enter Libra, on Monday, the Moon at 05-26 and Venus at 11-42.

Yesterday US jets attacked targets near the Afghan capital, Kabul, for a fourth night, triggering heavy anti-aircraft fire. Muslim protests around the near, middle and far east are taking place. The al Qaeda group issued a videotaped message praising the terrorists who carried out the attacks in the United States -- and warning of more to come. An uneasy feeling seems to permeate the news right now. The world waits and watches to witness the second phase of the war on terrorism in Afghanistan.
The last quarter Moon is now in Leo. There are no major planetary aspects until Sunday when Mercury is at inferior conjunction with the Sun both squaring Mars and trining Uranus.

Last night US bombers and cruise missiles attacked a range of military targets in Afghanistan for the second night running. Afghanistan's ruling Taleban say they will "forcefully resist" the US-led military campaign against them, and will not hand over Osama Bin Laden. At least 114 people die in Milan as a Scandinavian SAS aircraft hits a small plane on the runway and catches fire.
The Moon is now in Cancer and she is approaching another close conjunction with Jupiter (00-35 GMT tomorrow), before arriving at last quarter phase (04-20 GMT tomorrow).

Chart below set for Kabul. As the disseminating Moon in Gemini rises over Kabul on the evening of Sunday 7th October 2001, she is about to align to an occultation of Saturn. This auspicious moonrise was the sign, war there has begun. The masters of war in the west may well have been oblivious to the evenings lunar/planetary and local space alignment. This month's pass by is on Sunday 7th October 2001 at 18-48 GMT. The disseminating Moon enters Gemini 15-13 GMT today in preparation of, and build up to, the alignment. Much has been written in the astrological community over the past weeks about the recent events in the USA. The Saturn Pluto opposition across the US chart central axis is accepted by most authorities as the dominant astrological signature of the event. In addition the Moon at the time of the events in New York and Washington on September 11th, was exactly on the Jupiter/Saturn midpoint. Both conjunctions either side of this event were very close. In the case of Saturn, there was an occultation over some parts of the USA (not visible from New York however) by the Moon on the day before the terrorist attacks. On the day after, the Moon almost occulted Jupiter. Furthermore the Astrocartography Map set for the moment of maximum partial Lunar eclipse of 5th July 2001 (the preceding eclipse), shows Mars exactly on the IC of New York. The preceding Full Moon (September 2nd 2001) has Neptune exactly rising at New York and Venus setting. George Bush has Natal Mars on the MC of Afghanistan.
Friday October 5th 2001-- Yesterday a Russian plane flying 77 people from Israel to Russia exploded before crashing into the Black Sea, Russian officials have said. A Russian Emergencies Ministry spokesman said the plane - Flight 1812 - had gone down 185 kilometres (114 miles) off the Russian coastal town of Adler. The plane crashed at approximately 1335 Moscow time (0935GMT), the Itar-Tass news agency said. Mr Putin has ordered a full investigation into the crash. There were conflicting reports about the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The UK prime minister arrives in Moscow for talks with President Putin, as efforts are stepped up to build a global coalition against terrorism. The chart for the crash is set out below. I have been unable to ascertain the time of take off. The crash occurred at local Noon, Saturn had just set over the Black Sea. The Taurean Moon was seperating from an opposition to a retrograde Mercury, and applying to a fixed square with Neptune. Neptune was due East. There is mystery and confusion woven in with this event. It seems to me at first impression to be a manifestation of Mercury Retrograde. I would suggest unlucky timings, errors of judgements, and fiery projectiles. Sagittarius was rising.
Saturn opposite Pluto.
The major planetary aspect involving the outer slower moving planets will be a triple opposition of Saturn and Pluto. The dates for this planetary, aspect are August 5th 2001, November 2nd 2001 (at a time when the Moon occults Saturn) and May 26th 2002. This period marks a period of difficult climax to the current Saturn Pluto cycle which started with their conjunction in August 1982 (in Libra).
Previous cycles started in 1947, in Leo, and 1914-1915 (a triple conjunction at the time of the start of the first world war) in Cancer. The current cycle ends in 2020 with another conjunction, this time in Capricorn. The last opposition of the planetary pair occurred during 1965-1966 in Virgo/Pisces.
The meanings and manifestation of this planetary opposition are 'the application of force or compulsion affecting large groups or masses of people'. 'Progress through hard labour'. Ebertin (THE COMBINATION OF STELLAR INFLUENCES) states 'a fanatical adherence to one's principals' as a manifestation of Saturn Pluto. A major step forward in the advancement of the destiny of struggling nations is in sway at this time.
The next eclipse is an annular solar eclipse on Dec. 14th 2001, followed by a penumbral lunar eclipse on December 30th 2001.
Thursday October 4th 2001.
Yesterday's peaking Mars/Jupiter opposition coincided with Israeli forces remaining in a Palestinian-controlled area of the Gaza Strip after launching heavy raids against Palestinian positions. This followed a Palestinian attack on a Jewish community. The event emphasises the current difficulty in the Middle East and in the world at large. In the US the Greyhound bus company suspends all services across the US after six people die in a crash triggered by a knife attack on one of its drivers.
Across the globe are news stories of economic uncertainty. Much of the financial 'downturn' has been caused by the events of September 11th 2001. It is well to be aware that the current Saturn Pluto opposition, recognised by most astrological authorities as the harbinger of the recent global events, remains 'active' well into next year. Mars is opposite Jupiter at 17-00 GMT today. This is the third of three oppositions between this pair of planets this year. The other two dates coincided with the first Foot and Mouth case in the UK (February 19th 2001). The second coincided with the execution by lethal injection of Timothy McVeigh in the USA (June 9th 2001). We can maybe expect, therefore, another important 'over-the-top' type event to occur today. On 24 September, at 1038 GMT, a huge explosion occurred on the Sun, which hurled a giant cloud of magnetic super hot gas towards the Earth. The Sun is particularly active at the moment with many sunspots scattered across its surface. Nine definite spot groups can be counted, some comprising a myriad of small spots clustered around larger ones.
Here on Earth the US-led coalition against terrorism builds up pressure on the Afghan Taleban rulers as Saudi Arabia, their last Arab ally, severs ties. Plans are being drawn up to cope with up to a million refugees if the US-led coalition launches strikes against Afghanistan. The first strike could happen anytime.

United States combat aircraft have been ordered to move towards the Gulf region. Correspondents say the move as the most significant yet in Washington's preparations for retaliation against those responsible for last week's suicide plane missions in New York and Washington. According to sources at the Pentagon, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has ordered more than 100 aircraft to start moving to the region today.

News today......(CNN) Afghanistan's top Islamic clerics are meeting on to decide whether to hand over Osama bin Laden. CNN sources say that that despite the growing prospect of U.S. military action, the Taliban are unlikely to surrender the millionaire Saudi suspected on masterminding the New York and Washington hijack attacks.
President Bush urges Palestinians and Israelis to "seize the moment" as both sides take steps to reduce violence.

The New Moon in Virgo is today. This New Moon is very tightly quintile to Jupiter. There is a transforming effect at work. An airy trine involving Uranus, Saturn and Mercury focuses our attention. There is strategy, detachment, and precision at work in the chart. This lunation is midway between eclipses, the influence and pull of the Solar eclipse on December 14th 2002 begins to wax, the effect of the solar eclipse on June 21st 2001 begins to wane.
Senior US officials say up to 60 nations backing perceived terrorists face the "full wrath" of America's military might following Tuesday's attacks.. Yesterday the United States was rocked by devastating attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. Massive casualties are feared, with thousands feared to have died inside the buildings, with hundreds more presumed to have perished on board the hijacked planes. The first explosion was timed at 12-45 GMT.
Globally the Moon at the time of the incident was Void of Course in Gemini exactly conjunct the transiting Jupiter/Saturn midpoint. Mercury was exactly rising over the Manhattan horizon. The Sun, and local MC form a 'finger of fate' with Uranus. The chart is shown below.
In the American National Chart, the transiting Lunar Node is conjunct natal Venus, transiting Saturn trines natal Saturn. Mercury conjuncts natal Saturn, Uranus trines Mars, and Pluto rumbles around the Ascendant. Transiting Saturn is conjunct the natal Mars Uranus midpoint. Ebertin in 'The combination of stellar influences' describes this combination as ' Violence, energy concentrated on separation, a heavy injury, violent destruction'. This seems at first impression to be the dominant astrological signature of the event. The current Saturn Pluto opposition lies right across this natal US Mars/Uranus midpoint, and right across the Ascendant/Descendant axis. Mercury as he rose over Manhattan conjunct US natal Saturn appears to have coincided with the devastation.

Yesterday Wall Street halted the decline after a morning of deep gloom in Europe and Asia - including the FTSE sinking under 5,000 points. The Moon was occulting Saturn in Gemini (visible from the USA) as these events occurred. There is some talk of a world recession on the horizon.
More than 160 people are reported to have been killed in three days of religious violence in the central Nigerian city of Jos.

The Moon enters Gemini at 09-42 today, passing very close to Saturn at 12-50 GMT tomorrow and exactly at last quarter phase at 19-00 GMT tomorrow. This 'mutable last quarter' corresponds with 'crisis in movement' and provides a much more fluid atmosphere than provided by the 'static' moon in Taurus of the last few days.
Trouble flares up and continues in the Middle East during the first day of Mars in Capricorn as a car with a Palestinian number plate overtakes a van taking teachers to school in the Jordan Valley and opens fire.
A major global issue in the news in many countries right now concerns asylum seekers. The UK home secretary says he is close to deciding plans for immigration reform, which may involve work permits for asylum seekers.

As we stand on the brink of Mars's ingress into Capricorn we learn that stock markets around the world lunge because of US financial data published yesterday, markets around the world are falling.
Zimbabwe has committed itself to a Commonwealth-brokered deal to end the violent occupation of white-owned farms by restoring the rule of law.
The authorities in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh say rising flood waters are continuing to cause havoc and cost lives. Twelve more deaths have been reported, bringing the total to at least 39.
Venus is sextile Saturn and Mercury is square Jupiter today, as the waning Moon continues in Taurus. A prevailing atmosphere of practical resolution remains the dominant feature of the day, but beware of unsound judgements. The Mars ingress into Capricorn occurs at 17-51 GMT. Mars will reside in this sign until October 27th. A short period of industrial disturbances may manifest globally, manufacture, realism, determination, industry, may all now take centre stage. The disseminating Moon enters Taurus at 00-19 GMT today. The Sun, now half way through Virgo, is square Saturn. The day may well start on a difficult note, and there may also be a stubborn and very pragmatic vibration as news events unfold during the day. News stories at this time seem 'weak', not a lot is happening! The economic news reports that yesterday, (as the Sun squares Saturn and Pluto), London's FTSE 100 dropped 2.1 percent, or 111.2 points, to end at 5,204.8, hitting a three-year low.
The 'space news' this week is that 'all galaxies that have central bulges are now believed to have black holes at their cores, our Milky Way included. Wednesday July 18th 2001.Yesterday an earthquake occurred in Italy. The quake, with a 5.2 magnitude, shook the Alto Adige region at 5:06 p.m. (1506 GMT) on Tuesday, six miles north of the town of Merano, close to the border with Austria. This quake occurred as the balsamic Moon made almost exact alignments with Saturn and Venus (also see below).

Monday July 16th 2001. Now both Venus and Saturn are applying in opposition to Pluto. The Venus opposition occurs on Tuesday of this week, Saturn has his turn on August 5th. This planetary pair had a close encounter yesterday (see 14th July). The near exact planetary alignment coincided with the US perfectly exact missile interception. A target missile equipped with a mock warhead was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California late Saturday. Twenty minutes later, the interceptor missile was launched from an island in the Pacific 4,800 miles away. At 11:09 p.m. ET, the two collided in an explosion 150 miles above the ocean.

Much tension remains high in the city of Bradford in northern England after Saturday night's violence, one of worst nights of rioting in the UK for many years. Mars and Pluto are near conjunct in Sagittarius. The Moon was and will be in Aquarius till noon today when she enters Pisces. The Moon then makes a series of difficult square aspects from this point for the rest of this day and all through Tuesday.

The Partial Lunar Eclipse on July 5th 2001 occurs at 14 degrees Capricorn. The 'goaty' Moon at that time makes no planetary aspect but begins a long build up to an earthy waning trine to Venus. The fundamental tone of this eclipse is one of 'the knowledge of value and quality'. It is essentially a benevolent eclipse. Uranus is in airy trine to Jupiter, high tech advances are taking place, Saturn is similarly trined to Neptune, a fertile period for the arts. Saturn is applying to an opposition to Pluto. This is an accompanying note of mass compulsion to proceedings (see below) . The astrological chart for the eclipse demonstrates a classic 'seesaw' planetary picture which has been building up in the skies for a number of weeks, corresponding to a similar polarisation underway at this present time in society.

Sunday June 24th 2001 A powerful earthquake hit southern Peru yesterday killing at least 47 people, with damage and injuries also reported in neighbouring Chile. (Picture from CNN below). The 7.9 magnitude quake shook southern Peru - and parts of Chile and Ecuador -- around 3:35 p.m. local time, flattening dozens of homes, churches and buildings, officials said. Geophysicist Brian Lassige at the U.S. National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colorado, said the quake was centered about 120 miles west of the coastal city of Arequipa, about 500 miles southeast of Lima. Abroad a survivor of the 1982 killings of hundreds of Lebanese civilians tries to open a war crimes case against the Israeli prime minister. The authorities in Angola are preparing for a total eclipse of the sun later this week, handing out sunglasses and trying to warn people not to damage their eyes by looking at the sun during the eclipse. All of these events occurred as Mercury made a conjunction with Jupiter. The aspect first occurred in mid May this year and will be repeated on 12th July 2001. Total Solar eclipse of June 21st 2001
Saturday June 2nd 2001. As the Sun moves to an opposition with Pluto, and Mars passes in closest approach to the Earth, we hear of violence yesterday in Tel Aviv and Khatmandu .
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has begun a meeting of his security cabinet to discuss Friday's suicide bomb attack in Tel Aviv, which killed 17 and left over 80 injured. The attack - the worst in Israel for at least five years happened late in the evening outside a club, crowded with young people going out for the weekend.
In Nepal last night King Birendra (pictured below) and most of his family were shot dead at a banquet by the heir to the throne, apparently in a dispute over his marriage.

In the UK , as we enter general election week, fuel protesters who staged overnight demonstrations at oil refineries and depots say they are planning further action on Saturday.
Mars is beginning to oppose Jupiter and this aspect dominates the month especially around the middle of the month of June 2001. The next Full Moon is on 6th June, is conjunct Pluto.
All of the current violent reactions may be traced to the astrological and astronomical movement of Mars right now. MARS very bright as its closest approach (opposition retrograde period magnitude -2.2, between Scorpius and Sagittarius) rises in the southeast during twilight. By 11 or midnight daylight saving time it It's now 20 arcseconds in diameter, larger than at any time since 1988, and practically at the maximum apparent diameter of 21 arcseconds that it will reach on June 21st, the day of the Solstice and Total Solar Eclipse.
FRIDAY June 1st 2001. BBC News reports:- Earthquake experts are investigating a tremor measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale which was felt across Devon and Cornwall. The tremor happened at around 00-45 BST on Friday, and lasted for several seconds. The British Geological Survey estimates that the epicentre was in the Bristol Channel area, about 35km west of Hartland Point in north Devon. It described the quake as being "quite significant" for the UK, which has about 300 earthquakes a year. It is the strongest tremor since last September, when an earthquake in Warwick measured 4.2 and was felt across central England. An earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale shook Dumfries in Scotland on 13 May this year. Six thousand earthquakes measuring more than 4.0 on the Richter scale occur in the world every year. The largest earthquake in Britain was in 1931, off the Dogger Bank in the North Sea, which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale.

Twenty five days remain to the Summer Solstice and Total Solar eclipse on June 21st 2001. The quality of the time right now as the first of June approaches may be described as 'Eclipse Season'. The Moon today past first quarter enters Libra at 10-42 GMT. Venus forms a waxing masculine sextile with Uranus tomorrow and she forms a waxing fiery trine with a retrograde Mars on Sunday. Potentially a day for fancy and fun, with a twist of the unusual. The annual Pluto opposition occurs on Monday June 4th 2001 as Mercury turns retrograde on that day. A time for peace brokerships, love entanglements and a rush of social energy is immediately ahead of us, the Full Moon in Sagittarius, (the final Full Moon before the Eclipse), is next Tuesday, the tides of human emotion are set to rise during the days ahead.

Venus enters Taurus on the day of the election. (Taurus is Tony Blair's Sun sign.) This ingress leads to some semblance of a last minute surge of popular acclaim and popularity for the Prime Minister. Mars in Sagittarius also turns retrograde five days before the election. A Full Moon at 15 degrees Sagittarius conjunct Pluto is exact on the day before the election. Late Friday, May 25th, the near-Earth asteroid 1999 KW4 will fly by Earth
13 times farther from our planet than the Moon. The space rock will be
brighter than 11th magnitude for much of the time between now and May
28th, making it an easy target for amateur astronomers with mid-sized
telescopes and CCD cameras. Yesterday, radar astronomers using NASA's
Goldstone Planetary Radar to monitor the approaching asteroid announced

Israel unleashed a helicopter attack on the Palestinian police station at Jabalya in Gaza, (Palestinian sources said). As we enter the last five days of the astrological month of Taurus, the dominating planetary aspect of the week is a conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter at 17 degrees Gemini today, Wednesday 20th May 2001. Summer Solstice 2001 Total Solar Eclipse. The 'hung over' Full Moon enters Sagittarius at 13-05 GMT today, releasing us from the intensities of the past few days. She opposes the current Mercury Saturn conjunction at the end of the day (GMT). UK citizens are subject to another lunar occultation tomorrow May 9th 2001 . The Moon two days past the Full occults a faint 4th magnitude star 4 Psi Ophiuchus. The stars disappears around 02-33 GMT and reappears around 03-45 GMT. Difficult to view even telescopically because of low altitude in the UK skies, we at the daze will nevertheless check to see if this celestial event coincides with some event in the UK. Tony Blair will choose the moment to release 'from the darkness' the date of the UK general election.
This occultation is one of 22 similar lunar occultations over the UK this year, 13 of which occur after October 24th 2001. There are 24 such occultations next year (2002), 16 in 2003, and only 8 in 2004. The two major lunar occultations over the UK this year involve Saturn, on Nov. 3rd 2001 and Dec. 1st 2001.

World News as the Full Moon approaches reports that:- Macedonia's leadership appears to be divided over whether to declare a state of war, as the Macedonian army resumes its shelling of ethnic Albanian rebel positions. After three days of fighting in the north-east of the country, Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski told Macedonian TV that a declaration of war was "probable".

BEIJING, China -- China has warned that U.S. plans for a missile defense system (NMD) could lead to a possible arms race. China's official Xinhua news agency on Wednesday slammed President George W. Bush's call to replace the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty (ABM) -- between Washington and Moscow -- with a new missile system. Bush says the treaty needs to be replaced with a missile system that protects the United States and its allies from attacks by what Washington calls rogue nations or accidental launches. MAIN NEWS TODAY....The Israeli air force fired on Syrian targets positioned in Lebanon, Israeli and Lebanese officials said. Seems to us, here at the daze, to be a serious development. The raid, just before dawn, was in retaliation for a cross-border attack on Saturday by Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas that killed an Israeli soldier.

The strike, which Lebanon calls "a dangerous attack," comes as new suggestions to curtail the violence are to be put to Israel . The Moon is at Last Quarter phase, and at apogee, in Capricorn. (Things pretty slow and reactionary today). The Sun is separating from a trine with Mars. (There has been a surge of activity, but its now waning). The Sun will enter Taurus on Friday April 20th. The next New Moon is on 23rd April. An astrologically quieter week lies before us. (It is often in these lull periods that we witness a precipitation of events). The News in the UK reports the government's foot and mouth strategy is in turmoil as it orders a U-turn on vaccination. The crisis worsens in Northern Ireland and the number of animals waiting to be buried or slaughtered approaches a million. British police suspect dissident Irish Republicans of planting a bomb in a postal centre in north London. Police said the high-explosive device went off in a postal sorting office in Hendon, which was empty, just before 11:30 p.m. (2230 GMT) on Saturday. Venus which is almost stationary in the skies right now is opposite the UK natal Uranus. ( A difficult week for the UK politic is forecast.)
In the US thousands of mourners poured into Cincinnati yesterday for the funeral of Timothy Thomas, the 19-year-old black man whose shooting by police sparked civil unrest. In the aftermath of the recent event in China, the pilot of the American spy plane that crash-landed there revealed yesterday that he and his crew were subjected to sleep deprivation and other torture methods.
The astrological energy of the moment is symbolised by eight planets in Fire and Air signs. There are no planets in water signs. The focus is on 'inflammable assertiveness' with sparse resource to more 'sensitive intuition'. The next big 'change of gear', will occur from April 20th when as well as being the day of

This combination adds a dash of the 'unexpected' to proceedings today, and confers sheer muscular energy to accomplishments tomorrow. Mercury is trine Pluto also tomorrow. This last aspect may bring insight and penetration of thought to bear on experiences. Expect a plethora of events, between now and the time of the Last quarter Moon in Capricorn 15-30 GMT April 15th.

For the last year the progressed Moon in the UK chart has been in Scorpio, very fitting for a nation in the throws of a seemingly relentless series of 'mishaps' including Fuel crisis, floods, transport and now the slaughter of millions of farm animals in an effort to beat Foot and Mouth disease. The Moon in Scorpio can be regarded as a bit of a battlefield. The Moon will reside in Scorpio until June 2002. Uranus by transit is opposite the UK natal Saturn for most of the year 2001. This adds a 'shattering' effect to structures and institutions. The lunar node is conjunct the national chart MC. The progressed Moon is waxing past first quarter, conjunct progressed Neptune in July 2001, and is this year at one arm of a Fixed Cross of secondary and natal planetary positions.

Royal scandal in the UK once again hits the news. Sophie Countess of Wessex born on 20th January 1965 under a conjunction of Mercury and Venus in Capricorn. Those two planets were conjunct at the weekend in Aries. Transiting Jupiter right now is inconjunct this duo of planets in her birth chart. She also has Pluto square her natal Uranus/Pluto conjunction all year. Her progressed Moon is approaching the balsamic (old) phase in her horoscope. A US NAVY surveillance aircraft carrying a crew of 24 collided with a Chinese fighter on April 1, 2001. The US plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Chinese soil at Lingshui, on the southern tip of Hainan Island, China. The Chinese fighter was lost in the South China Sea. Chinese officials have blamed the United States for the incident. The U.S. has accused China of intercepting military aircraft in an unsafe manner. One week later the plane and crew remain in China. China demands an American apology. On the day of the incident the Moon was first quarter in Cancer. Venus was at the midpoint of the ongoing Jupiter Neptune trine.

UK readers may like to stay tuned to the daze for astrological commentary as we approach yet another lunar occultation of a visible star (55 Delta Gemini) on April 1st 2001. We, at the daze, view these occultations in a similar way to our view of lunations, they are significant. We consider occultations may be 'mini-eclipses', each with a unique quality and effect upon all strands of karma and being, especially in the area of 'visibility', which in the case of tonight's occultation includes the UK. The star being occulted on April 1st is a double White Star called WASAT of magnitude 3.51. (Naked eye Visibility). Its tropical celestial longitude is 18 degrees Cancer. The star disappears over the UK (at an altitude of thirty degrees) around 22-56 GMT and reappears around 23-34. The young hot nature of the star leads us to predict a positive influence and effect. (Older red stars might be considered to exert a more destructive or negative effect when occulted)
Tony Blair has to decide about a UK election this weekend. Mars is active in his chart on April 1st, the day of the UK occultation. The degree of the occulted star is conjunct Blair's Uranus, square his Saturn/Uranus conjunction.
IF MAY 3rd is chosen, the planetary transits indicate a much better day for Blair than for Hague. A simple comparison of planetary transits to both Tony Blair's and William Hague's astrological charts on May 3rd 2001, a probable date for the election, indicates Blair riding high on Venus transits, and Hague suffering under an applying Saturn transit. We are now in a period in time of five days between the Vernal Equinox ( 20th March 2001) and the New Moon in Aries (25th March 2001). This is very much a seeding time, with the major planetary aspect being a waning square in mutable signs from Mercury to Jupiter, which casts an otherworldly and deeply illogical hue over the period. World News states that U.S. stocks fell sharply on Tuesday after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by half a percentage point, signalling disappointment that the Fed did not move in a more aggressive manner.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and US President George W. Bush affirmed continued support for each other, also on Tuesday, when the two leaders met for the first time since both took office. Monday March 19th 2001 Macedonia is mobilising its troops to launch an offensive against ethnic Albanian rebels in the hills around the country's second city, Tetovo. Fighting raged for a fifth consecutive day on Sunday, with government forces inside the city using artillery and mortars to shell rebel hideouts. Thousands of people took to the streets of the capital Skopje to demand firmer government action against the ethnic Albanian fighters. This News reaches us as Mars and Pluto are conjunct in Sagittarius. There are enough warlike connotations here to predict another wave of Balkan military conflicts. The Spring Equinox chart is dominated by a separating conjunction of Mars and Pluto, sextile a separating conjunction of the Moon and Neptune both inconjunct the Lunar Node. The Foot and Mouth virus reached the French Mainland on Tuesday 13th March. By Wednesday March 15th the number of confirmed cases on in the UK tops 200. As the Scorpionic Moon rose and hung in the skies, the UK Government ordered troops to standby, and deliberated upon the sanction of the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of farm and wild animals. Globally share prices fell substantially, propelled downwards primarily by high technology share falls. The Moon is now in Sagittarius, approaching last quarter. Mars creeping closer to a conjunction by celestial longitude to Pluto. Something powerfully explosive is building up, violence and intransigence abound, as here in the UK the pyres of burning animal carcasses are built higher. The Full Moon at 19 degrees Virgo, is square Pluto, in Sagittarius, indicating a difficult lunation and a tense and possibly traumatic time. Here at the daze we notice that the degree of the tropical zodiac in focus here is the point occupied by the Mars/Saturn conjunction in the relationship chart of Tony Blair and George W Bush. The point is also square Bush's Uranus. There is some astrological evidence here of a problem for the president, we will keep a close watch. The Full Moon is sextile the UK national chart Neptune, and Moon. The most potent aspect in the skies right now is an almost exact alignment of Mercury and Uranus which is tightest on March 10th. Mars is creeping up to a conjunction with Pluto. Jupiter is applying in a waxing trine to Neptune. All of this points to an important time. A time of great surprises may be before us it would seem.

Two planetary conjunctions, a planetary arrangement called a 'fiery kite', and a Full Moon are now all building up in the skies of Earth. The Kite manifests on March 7th from noon to 18-00 GMT. It involves the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Pluto. Strange tragic and fiery News from China as the 'fiery kite' formed in the skies.....At least 42 children and teachers were killed, and many more suffered terrible burns. Pupils as young as eight were told to manufacture firecrackers by hand by corrupt teachers, Communist officials and businessmen in the south-eastern province of Jiangxi, the families of victims said yesterday. Unconfirmed reports said four teachers, one of them a woman, and 38 children were either killed by the blast or were crushed when the two-storey Fanglin village primary school collapsed.
The Full Moon in Virgo occurs 17-24 on Friday 9th March. Mercury passes very closely aligned to Uranus, in Aquarius, on March 10th, (a day also of an airy grand trine involving the Moon, Jupiter and Neptune ) and Mars conjuncts Pluto by celestial longitude in Sagittarius on March 18th. Venus hovers in mid Aries turning retrograde on the day of the full Moon. We are now only twelve days from the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.
March 5th 2001 As the Sun built up to a waxing square aspect to the Sun, we hear of a spate of three intensely traumatic events in the world. In Portugal we read of a bus and two cars which fell 50 metres into a fast-flowing river after a 116-year-old bridge suddenly gave way at around 2100 GMT on Sunday 4th March.
From the Middle East we hear of a stampede on the third day of the Hajj in Saudi Arabia that has killed 35 Muslim pilgrims. CNN NEWS reports "At 8.12 a.m. (1100 GMT) this morning...most pilgrims who had arrived in Mina early flocked to Jamarat in huge numbers. "As a result of pushing at the stoning point, several pilgrims, most of whom were elderly, fell to the ground, resulting in the death of 35 persons...as a result of suffocation and stampede."
From the USA we now hear of a shooting rampage at a high school outside San Diego which left two students dead, at least 13 wounded and a ninth-grader under arrest, authorities said Monday. The shooting occurred about 9:20 a.m. (12:20 p.m. EST) at Santana High School in Santee, California, about 10 miles Northeast of San Diego. One of the victims was found dead at the school, while a second, a 15-year-old boy, died at nearby Grossmont Hospital.

The night sky over BBC Television Centre was lit up like a bonfire by the high explosive device which detonated shortly after midnight. (The time of the occultation see below March 3rd) A controlled explosion has been carried out following a security scare close to London's Victoria station. The 'real IRA' are said by BBC news to be responsible. The next occultation visible from the UK is on April 1st 2001 at around 22-56 GMT, this time involving a dim star in the constellation of Gemini. The foot and mouth epidemic in the UK has continued to spread with the number of confirmed cases rising to 60. Right now the Sun is applying to a waxing square with Pluto. Serious clashes of will may well manifest in the next day or so. The aspect is exact on Monday at 18-10 GMT.
March 3rd 2001 SATURDAY
Mercury sextiles Venus 12-30. A LUNAR OCCULTATION OF 3rd MAGNITUDE '123 ZETA TAU' OCCURS OVER THE UK TOMORROW MARCH 4th 2001, starting just after midnight. The astronomical event begins around 00-05 GMT and finishes around 01-01 GMT, (the timings depend upon your location). The Moon, just past first quarter, will be have an altitude of around 24 degrees (over the UK) as 'disappearance' occurs. The occulted star is a dim star, spectral class B4, indicating a fairly young , white hot, 'Helium Star' in the constellation of Taurus, the event is visible in clear UK skies with binoculars. This occultation is a minor one.
The last New Moon was conjunct the UK national chart Pluto, and as tonight's occultation occurs the UK is staggering under a Foot and Mouth outbreak and the hangover of a freak rail accident. Both events have occurred at the same time so astrological thought points to a synchronistic connection. Images of pyres of burning animal carcasses infiltrate the News TV programmes. The population bewildered by the forces of destiny right now.

Described as a 'freak accident' and 'a set of extraordinary coincidences', this tragedy resulted in 13 killed and 70 injured. Time given by BBC News. Mars and Pluto straddle the MC of the location in Sagittarius. Mercury (applying to Uranus) exactly rises over the horizon of the location in Aquarius. Uranus/Neptune midpoint is conjunct the Ascendant. Globally the Moon applies square to Neptune, and applies to a conjunction with the Venus Saturn midpoint. FEB. 25th 2001-- SUNDAY
The Moon void in Pisces, still very new, enters Aries 10-15 AM GMT. Observe it shining well to the lower left of Venus in the western sky early this evening. Mercury turns direct 15-45 GMT, stays direct till early June, sextiles Venus at midnight GMT today, this waning sextile aspect being repeated on March 3rd, and dominating the week ahead with a frivolous and easy planetary vibration. Mercury will conjunct Venus on April 9th, but first has a very close alignment to Uranus on March 10th. For some time Earth has been closing in on Mars at a rate of almost a million miles (1.6 million kilometres) per day. Mars is opposite the Sun on June 14th and is closest to Earth (since 1988) on June 21, 2001, the day of a Total Solar Eclipse, and the day of Summer Solstice.
FEB. 26th 2001 -- MONDAY
The crescent Moon shines left of Venus in the west. The two are conjunct by celestial longitude in tropical Aries at 16-45 GMT. An astrologically easier day than of late. Gentler lunar aspects in sway, but the news in the UK is that the country is gripped by foot and mouth disease.
FEB. 27 -- TUESDAY
The Moon is void most of the day till she enters Taurus 20-00 GMT. An inert day. This evening the Moon in Taurus shines between Venus (to its lower right) and Saturn and Jupiter (farther to the Moon's upper left).
An 18th case of foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed at an abattoir in Okehampton, Devon. This comes after the ban on movement of livestock in the UK was extended for two more weeks, starting from this Friday. Agriculture Minister Nick Brown has announced the measure after the 17th case of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed. France and Germany begin slaughtering sheep potentially infected with foot-and-mouth disease as the UK bans horse racing in an attempt to contain the outbreak.
JAKARTA, -- President Abdurrahman Wahid is coming under increasing pressure for leaving Indonesia while people are dying in ethnic clashes. A police spokesman said indigenous Dayaks massacred 118 Madurese migrants trying to flee Kalimantan at the weekend, adding that police sent to protect the refugees fled when the attack took place.
A crystal found in a meteorite from Mars could only have been formed by a microbe and may be evidence of the oldest life form ever found, researchers say. Scientists at the Johnson Space Center in Houston say that a crystallized magnetic mineral, called magnetite, found in a Martian meteorite is similar to crystals formed on Earth by bacteria.

The naked-eye eclipsing variable star Algol should be in one of its periodic dimmings, magnitude 3.4 instead of its usual 2.1, for a couple hours centred on 11:30 p.m. EST. Algol takes several additional hours to fade and to brighten. A quieter time.

In the UK as a New Moon in early Pisces yesterday is conjunct Pluto in the UK (1801) National Chart. This occurs as foot and mouth disease is taking grip and dominating News reports. That same New Moon is conjunct the IC point in the Blair/Bush relationship. A point of emotional roots. The New Moon at 4 degrees Pisces today at 08-21 GMT is square Mars, and square Jupiter. This difficult New Moon is the second lunation after the Partial Eclipse of Christmas day 2000 and the fourth before the Total Eclipse of the Sun on June 21st 2001. George Bush is meeting with Tony Blair. Click here for the relationship chart of these two. The New Moon is conjunct the IC of their relationship chart. Tony Blair has his Venus return right now. Mercury almost stationary is sextile Pluto, these two form a 'finger of fate' with Blair's Uranus and Bush's Sun.
The News as we approach the New Moon reports that American and British jets have been bombing Iraqi air defence systems in the north of the country. The attacks come after Iraqi anti-air craft fire on US planes conducting routine patrols north of Mosul. All planes left the area safely. The attacks are the first since last weekend's air strikes on Iraqi air defence sites. At home another case of foot-and-mouth has been discovered in Essex. The cattle farm at Great Warley, near Brentwood, already has an exclusion zone around it and Ministry of Agriculture officials are reviewing if the extent of the zone needs to be amended.
Wed. Feb. 21st 2001 Main UK news today reports Britain banned from exporting meat, livestock and milk to the EU until March 1, following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. MONDAY 12th FEB. 2001. Although given no better than a 1-in-100 chance of survival, today the (NEAR) spacecraft thumped onto the dusty, boulder-strewn surface of minor planet 433 Eros and lived to tell about it. The spacecraft continued to broadcast to Earth after touching down at an estimated 1.5 meters per second at 3:05 p.m. EST (20:05 Universal Time). As mission personnel looked on anxiously, NASA tracking stations in California and Spain continued to receive a low-power signal (but no data) after the first-ever landing on a small solar-system body.

The week ahead...... The disseminating Moon in Libra for two days, forming a 'fizzy' grand trine on Monday with Uranus, the Sun and Mercury. Lots of sweet froth, which turns increasingly difficult, stodgy and awkwardly dull as the day progresses and Mercury and the Sun square Saturn around Midnight (GMT). Mercury will be in inferior conjunction just after midnight on Tuesday, and the Moon enters Scorpio an hour or so later. Wednesday sees a besieged Scorpion Moon making very heavy weather of Saint Valentine's day. At 20-06 GMT on Wednesday Mars enters Sagittarius where he will remain until September 7th 2001, a very long residence owing to Mars turning retrograde mid May at the very end of Sagittarius. (Mars in Sagittarius promises a prolonged proactive period, dominating much of this year. Mars is conjunct Pluto on 19th March). Thursday sees the Moon entering Sagittarius at 10-03 GMT, and aligning conjunct to Mars some thirty seven minutes later. Retrograde Mercury is conjunct Uranus at 18-38. Thursday appears to be a surprising and energetic day. Friday sees the start of a build up to a very powerful mutable T-square in the skies of earth which then dominate the days right up to the New Moon on Friday February 23rd 2001 but which are felt most strongly on the Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st February. This planetary picture may well coincide with very rapid changes and developments in global situations. The Daze continues.
Israel is in focus. As Ariel Sharon gains power in Israel, the Daze gazes at the important Middle Eastern astrological charts. The Israeli National chart has a progressed New Moon this year in Cancer (14 degrees), at the very end of August. This is only the second progressed new Moon in Israel's history, the first being in 1972 in Gemini. The Nation of Israel was officially begun five days after an Annular Solar Eclipse in Taurus, a time of a 'difficult birth'. In 1956 at the time of the first progressed Full Moon in Sagittarius, the |Suez War was raging. In 1967 with progressed Moon in Aries the six day war occurred. The second progressed Full Moon occurred in 1986 at the very start of Capricorn, and now, amid many very difficult transits the dying embers of the lunation cycle are manifest. There is a new start for Israel this year, but the future astrologically is full of difficult transits and progressions. This year we will see Uranus square Natal Sun, Saturn conjunct Natal Venus, square Natal Mars. The year 2002 sees Uranus opposite Natal Mars, Progressed Mars square Natal Uranus, and Saturn conjunct natal Uranus. The picture appears warlike, violent and very shocking.
Ariel Sharon riding high right now (Feb. 2001) on the slip stream of Neptune transiting his Venus, has before him Saturn conjunct his natal Moon (for the last time, March 2001) and he has Uranus squaring this same Natal Moon next year (2002). Uranus conjuncts his natal Mercury and sun in the years 2003, 2004, and 2005. Elected at the time of Mercury retrograding, we at the daze expect nothing but difficulties for his office. His progressed Moon is currently waning, in Capricorn, enters Aquarius Feb. 2001, hits progressed last quarter in 2003, and then burns out towards a progressed New Moon which is a total eclipse (non-central ) in Taurus in 2010, when Pluto conjuncts his natal MC. Quite a decade!
Monday February 5th 2001.
The days are leading us to an astrologically 'difficult' Full Moon on Wednesday 8th February at 07-12 GMT. (see chart below). There is a planetary picture called a fixed T-square which dominates the geocentric skies right now and throughout the coming week. The Full Moon completes the picture at the forth corner of the 'Fixed Cross'. Interestingly on the day before the Full Moon, Neptune, Venus, Jupiter and the Moon are sixty degrees apart forming four points of a hexagon.
Monday and Tuesday 5th and 6th Feb. see the Moon in Cancer, and there are no major planetary aspects exact. These two days will witness a gathering gloom and pressure. As the Moon waxes to the full, the prevailing atmosphere may well be touchy, defensive, politically nationalistic, right wing even. The Israeli General Election is on Tuesday, the mood as I have said is geared to 'the Nation'. Not good days for World Peace these. George W Bush speaking today of the 'Son of Star Wars'. On Wednesday 7th the hexagonal arrangement occurs as the Moon 'roars' through Leo. The day has massive potential for good and for ill.

Thursday 8th looks to be very difficult as the Full Moon makes strong hard and difficult aspects with Uranus, Mars and Saturn. By the end of the 'shattering' day the Moon enters Virgo and ushers in more surprises and extraordinary events as the Sun is, on Friday 9th, conjunct Uranus and goes on to apply to the focal point of the Fixed T-square, peaking on the 12th Feb.
These are not easy times.
Monday 29th January to Friday February 2nd 2001
We here at the Daze continue to investigate the Bhuj earthquake click here for our thoughts and findings. As the month of January ends, as predicted by us last week, the planetary positions indicate a tense fixed T-square involving Mars, Uranus and Saturn. We attribute the earthquake as a manifestation and dissipation of this extremely difficult planetary tension. Let us hope there are no more such manifestations, however the ongoing planetary drama suggests otherwise. An opposition of Mars and Saturn occurs next Saturday, Feb. 3rd 2001, this planetary aspect shapes the mood of the week. We forecast a growing sense of tension, leading to states of challenge and conflict. The real peaking of the current geocentric planetary situation will occur on Feb. 8th 2001, the day of what could be described as a 'Shattering' Full Moon in Leo, opposite Uranus, forming a fixed cross with Saturn and Mars. (Shades of Summer 1999, and the terrible Turkish Earthquake, this one.)
Monday and Tuesday of this week see the Crescent Moon in Aries and an urgent impetus to events and experiences. The Moon enters Taurus 14-21 GMT on Wednesday setting the scene for more intransigence, wilfulness and a more 'solid' feel to situations. The Moon at first quarter phase occurs at 14-03 on Thursday Feb. 1st, preceded by a few hours, by Mercury 'slipping' into Pisces. Mercury is slowing down prior to turning retrograde on Sunday 4th Feb. 2001, and will only be in Pisces, this time around, for five days. Important days those, nothing signed and sealed at that time will remain intact, twists and turns in all affairs can be expected. Finally Venus (the bright evening star) 'flashes' into Aries on Friday 2nd initiating a surge of 'the collective anima', fiery dramas and assertions. Stay tuned.
FRIDAY 26th JANUARY 2001. ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE STRIKES (AS SATURN AND JUPITER ARE STATIONARY AND TURN DIRECT.) MOON RISES AT BHUJ AT TIME OF QUAKE.
Over 15,000 feared dead in India quake. The most powerful earthquake to strike India in more than half a century shook the subcontinent today, killing 845 people as it toppled buildings and houses in India and Pakistan. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Indian Prime Minister, said the 7.9 magnitude tremor could claim the lives of more than 1,000 people. The quake was also felt in Bangladesh and Nepal.The worst damage from the early morning quake was near the epicentre in India's western state of Gujarat. Police in the commercial centre of Ahmedabad reported 200 dead in that city alone, authorities said.Dozens of buildings had collapsed in the region, and relatives begged authorities to dig their family members from under the rubble. The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 8:46 am local time (0316 GMT), was near the town of Bhuj in a desert plateau near the border with Pakistan. The quake struck as the Moon rose over the horizon of Bhuj, conjunct Mercury, squaring Saturn and Mars. The current stellium (see the daze below) of Moon, Sun, Mercury, Uranus and Neptune were in the 12th house. Mars applies in tight fixed waning square to Uranus. A terrible, fateful event has occured.

24th January 2001. The New Moon and stellium of planets in Aquarius coincided today with the surprise news story about Peter Mandelson, the Northern Ireland Secretary, who has resigned from Tony Blair's Government - for the second time. This morning he was summoned to No 10 by the Prime Minister to "establish the facts" of his involvement with Srichand Hinduja's passport application. Mars today is conjunct the UK (1801 chart) Neptune. This planetary aspect also aptly coincides with (again in the UK) the announcement of a complete fishing ban in the North Sea.
Both Jupiter and Saturn are stationary turning direct, right now. Saturn 23-32 GMT today January 24th, and Jupiter at 08-17 GMT on 25th. The Daze expects great events at this time. Tomorrow (25th Jan.) Mercury squares the direct moving Saturn. A testing day. On Friday 26th the Sun conjuncts Neptune. All week Mars slowly builds up to a harsh waning fixed square aspect to Uranus. Saturn also is square to these two, indicating a very tense planetary situation. A trend of sudden violence seems inevitable, a shock to the system may well manifest next weekend, as the month of January draws to its end. Stay tuned.

The Sun has now moved into tropical Aquarius. The month opens with news from the Philippines of a military coup, on the exact day that progressed Mars is square the Natal Sun, in the Philippine national chart. The past week saw, on Tuesday 16th, the assassination of the president in the Congo coinciding with a Venus Pluto square in the skies. This square 'hit' the lunar node in the Congo National Chart, but there are more powerful and significant transits in the chart of this country now and in the coming months. Saturn is on the Ascendant this month, Uranus opposite its own position is on the MC of the chart between now and the spring equinox.
In the UK the month begins with an animal right protest over a controversial animal experimentation establishment in Huntingdonshire. In the UK chart Venus squares the Moon, Mercury conjuncts Venus and Mars squares Venus today by transit. Animal rights are to the fore in the UK political arena.
Monday 15th to Friday 19th January 2001.
The waning post eclipse Moon is in Libra approaching Last quarter phase at 12-35 on Tuesday 16th. The working week starting on a smoother note with only a hint of the potentially seedy undercurrent of the main planetary aspect of the week of Venus squaring Pluto on Wednesday 17th at 06-34 GMT. The accelerating Moon is in Scorpio on Wednesday and Thursday, conjuncting Mars (visible in the pre dawn skies) at 22-21 GMT on Wednesday. Friday 19th January, the last day of Capricorn, sees the Moon in Sagittarius and seems here to be a spirited ending to what could well be at times quite an intense mid week period.
EARTHQUAKE IN CENTRAL AMERICA.
The death toll from Central America's catastrophic earthquake continued to rise today, with dozens declared dead and at least 1,200 people missing. The quake occurred 65 miles (110 km) south-Southwest of San Miguel, El Salvador, at 11:33 a.m. (12:33 p.m. EST) Saturday.
The Uranus Pluto midpoint conjunct the MC. Moon Saturn midpoint on the Lunar Eclipse degree opposite the MC. The Moon square Sun Mars midpoint Last Tuesdays eclipse degree and the moon's node opposite the MC, square the Ascendant, in Cardinal T-square. A mutable T-square involving Moon Pluto and Venus. Moon Uranus Ascendant in a 'finger of fate' configuration. A chart full of trine and square aspects. Trapezoidal pattern involving Saturn, Moon, Pluto and Uranus active world-wide at the time but focused on the MC of this location, that's the key to this one. This chart is complex and demanding. It demands attention and scrutiny by all.
January 14th 2001
We have before us a curiously interesting day on January 14th 2001 when a grand trine in Earth signs occurs, in the skies of Earth, involving the Sun, Saturn and the Moon in the first half of the day and is followed later in the day by a looser airy grand trine involving the Moon, newly arriving in Libra, Mercury and Jupiter. This happens as Mercury (now in Aquarius) conjuncts Neptune. Also a splash of pentatonic ( 72 degree) aspects occur on this day. Looks mightily significant to us. The day starts with a grazing occultation (visible from the UK) by the Moon of a 4th magnitude star in tropical Virgo called 3 Nu Virgo.
This is how it pans out. Mercury conjuncts Neptune 01-10 GMT. The occultation occurs around 03-30 for mid UK locations. Around 04-00 GMT the grand trine in Earth is tightest. Around 09-00 GMT the Geocentric Solar System forms a symmetric pattern of 2 equilateral triangles orientated so that successive points make 72 degree angles. At 14-06 the Moon enters Libra and begins to form the airy grand trine which peaks around 20-00 GMT.
The Daze will be watching News stories closely.
January 11th 2001
To us all here at the Daze the Total Lunar Eclipse on Tuesday Night accompanied a positive 'pulling together' vibration. Witnessed by many millions in the UK it appeared to strike an emotional and 'homely' chord in peoples hearts and minds. The British Newspapers, on the morning after, displayed full front page colour photographs of a blood red eclipsed moon in clear evening skies. Not surprisingly this Eclipse Moon conjunct the Nation's Natal Moon (1801 Chart) seems to have had a distinctively memorable, even maybe emotional, effect momentarily on the Nation. It remains to be seen what events occur over the days and weeks ahead as the astrological effects of this climatic event work out. The next Total Lunar Eclipse occurs in 2003 on May 16th at 03-40 GMT aligned to 25 degrees Scorpio.

Yesterday's main world news saw an Israeli-organized protest against a U.S.-brokered peace proposal between Israel and the Palestinian Authority drew thousands of people today near a holy site in Jerusalem's Old City. In the UK the mother of murdered toddler James Bulger says she has lost faith in the justice system after her son's killers were granted anonymity. The issues here are protective, geared to the past, emotional and instinctive. This it appears is the 'vibration' associated with the day as the Moon, slipped into Cancer.
Today the Moon undergoes a Total Eclipse. The Eclipse occurs at a point in the skies conjunct the UK (1801 national chart) Moon. The point is also conjunct Vladimir Putin's Uranus, and is square to Tony Blair's natal Saturn/Neptune conjunction in Libra.
January 8th 2001. UK royal family eclipse tittle tattle, the Solar Eclipse on Christmas day fell on the Natal Saturn of Princess Margaret, (born 21st August, 1930 / 21.22 BSTGlamis Castle, Scotland: 56N37 3W01), she of course has been in the News with reports of ill heath. The Prince of Wales has broken a bone in his shoulder after falling off his horse during a fox hunt. The Total Lunar Eclipse on Tuesday 9th January is inconjunct his Natal Sagittarian Mars, transitting Uranus forms a 'finger of fate' with the two positions.
January 5th 2001:-UK Mass murderer Harold Shipman in the News again, may well have been responsible for the deaths of over 300 people. Click here for his chart and a report. The Fixed T-square which formed in the geocentric skies yesterday involving a Taurean Moon making an opposition to Mars in Scorpio and squaring Neptune in Aquarius marked a hardening of attitudes in the current middle east negotiations. This is the first 'planetary picture' of 2001, the next is a much softer watery grand trine involving the Moon Venus and Mars on the day of the Total Lunar Eclipse next Tuesday. We at the Daze look forward to this eclipse and to the slow and powerful build up to this astrological event. Today Friday may see a tough vibration as the Moon waxing in Taurus forms a square aspect to Uranus and draws closer to a pre-eclipse conjunctions with Saturn (02-10 GMT Saturday 6th), and Jupiter (14-46 GMT the same day), as can be observed in the evening skies right now. To compound all this Venus makes a square aspect to Jupiter today, inflating money markets maybe, increasing misjudgments and generally adding to a 'gathering storms' feeling. Hold tight there is an astrological roller coaster ride underway, culminating in Tuesday Night's eclipse.
New Year's Day 2001 :- THE DAZE LOOKS FORWARD....
The Christmas day eclipse in 2000 was square William Hague's natal Sun, the total Lunar Eclipse on January 9th 2001 is conjunct his Mars. Not positive astrological signs for a rise to prime ministerial status in the spring of 2001. 2001 may well be the election year in the UK. Saturn is active in the first half of the year on Tony Blair's chart, especially in May when Saturn is conjunct his natal Mars and Ascendant, a very sobering influence at times, but the Autumn of 2001 would be much better time astrologically for Tony to begin a second term.
For George W. Bush the year 2001 sees Uranus opposite natal Venus, Neptune conjunct the Descendant, progressed Moon in Libra at Crescent phase, and Jupiter conjuncting natal Sun starting in the Autumn 2001 and extending into 2002 The Uranus transit will splatter a series of surprises on his year, the peak times of this transit are in February, September and December 2001. We have here a year long trend of a blending of discovery, growth and control. Putin's progressed Sun entered Sagittarius during the past year, this first year of office marks the first of thirty years of his progressed Sun in Sagittarius, the sign occupied by his Natal Mars. His progressed horoscope shows a mutable T-square in operation during 2000,2001 and 2002. This man will astound. For two years he will assimilate and absorb as his progressed first quarter Moon journies through Pisces, then a more fiercely urgent personality may well manifest. Pluto will conjunct his natal Mars in 2006, the two were in fiery trine at birth. The year 2006 may well be a time when we will see great power made manifest. Right now a quieter period maybe.
For Prince Charles there may be a clearer resolution to his relationship situation when his progressed Venus conjuncts natal Mars and Progressed Moon enters Aries around February 2001. This is the time to watch you royal correspondents!
