The State of Texas

:

Shamrock

Named in 1903 when the railroad arrived.

:

 The Art Deco styled
U Drop Inn Cafe, built 1936

Was closed when we
were there in 2001, but
restoration began in 2002.

McLean (TX)

Little business remains in McLean, apart from the famous Devil's Rope Museum.
The building also houses another Route 66 museum.

The only restaurant in town is closed on Mondays - the day we were there!

Restored Phillips 66 gas station.  Built in 1929,
it's right on Route 66 in the middle of town.
Restored gas tanker
at the same location.
The Devil's Rope (Barbed Wire) Museum Mike in the diner mock-up at the Route 66 museum.

Amarillo

"Capital" of the Texas Panhandle.  Established 1887 with the arrival of the railroad.
It's a busy commercial centre for the vast high plains area.

:

One of the main points of interest is the Texas Steak Ranch, home of the 72oz steak.  Eat it, and all the trimmings, within one hour, and you get it for free!

Inside there is a list of some 30 people who have finished the steak, including a 13 year old lad!  I had a more modest 10-once steak.

:

Cadillac Ranch,
just west of Amarillo

It was set up in the 1970s "pop" artist
Stanley Marsh III

They are ten Cadillac cars
buried nose down in a field.
There is nothing else around.
