After the success of their homeland debut, U2 recorded the follow-up,
Another Day in London with Chas
De Whalley.
Signed by Island Records shortly after, the company recruited Martin
Hannett to cut 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
as their first UK single.
With Hannett unavailable after the death of Joy Division's Ian
Curtis, U2 decided on Steve Lillywhite as producer for A
Day Without Me and although he didn't particularly like the
song he agreed. The sessions went well and he was soon producing
the debut album Boy. The opening track
I Will Follow was released as a
single.

In their early days someone, perhaps an over-enthusiastic PR, managed
to attach the label "The Irish Joy Divsion" to U2. The band's love
of the Manchester band led them to experiment on their debut UK
single with producer Martin Hannett, although they had mixed feelings
about the results.
This version of 11 O'Clock Tick Tock is available on CD on Martin-
a now-deleted Factory Records tribute album released after
Martin Hannett's death.

U2's biggest hit at the time, this reached No. 96 according to
an interview Larry gave to the University of East Anglia's Student
Union Magazine in early 1981. Were the promotional department ill
that week? It's failure to chart any higher remains one of the great
unsolved mysteries of The Modern Age.
