An Island Records April Fool Joke saw employees in the promotions
department being told to prepare for a new U2 single: a Country
and Western song with a lead vocal by Adam Clayton. Imagine their
feelings on finding a couple of months later that the band were
delivering a whole album recorded and mixed in between dates on
the Zooropa tour, to be led off with a techno-style song with a
monotonic Edge vocal.
The Zooropa album was released
as the tour gathered momentum in Europe, selling 300,000 copies
in the UK in its first week, with Numb
gaining the most airplay due to its to being promoed to radio
DJs on CD. Lemon was promoed to
club DJs on two 12" singles featuring 6 mixes in the UK but
was never released officially, making Stay
the first officially-released single from the album to chart in
the UK.
The soundtrack album to Wim Wenders' Faraway,
So Close! features early versions of both Stay and The Wanderer.
