Supplementary note of Friday 7 October 2016
I have recently been informed that my punctuation of direct speech is not correct. I have checked back on this and found that the difference from my punctuation in relation to the established rules goes back to Chapter 1.
Specifically, I found the following as the first occurrence, on page 1 of Chapter 1.
“So, would you like to lead off.” invites Edith, though not intoned as a question.
It appears that the rule is such that the full stop after the word "off" should be a comma as there is text continuing after it in the same sentence.
However, I looked at this carefully and decided that I found the rule illogical and inconsistent: question mark and exclamation mark go straight through, yet not full stop; and I feel that there can be confusion between when someone ends a sentence and when someone pauses in a sentence.
Also, if the novel were to be presented as a movie, then the dialogue is already prepared between the quotation marks, rather than it needing to be converted by replacing some commas each with a full stop.
So I continue to write as before, perhaps thus using my own punctuation rule.
Please bear in mind that the dictionary compilers take the view that they document usage, not prescribe usage.
However, I do not want anyone to be misled by my punctuation, so I state this supplementary note before Chapter 1 is listed.

The graphic was produced using Serif DrawPlus X5, using one of my own fonts and an adaptation of a piece of ClipArt from the DrawPlus X5 Gallery, from the Seasons folder.

In producing the above document I used a font that I made some time ago so as to be able to include the symbols for the localizable sentences. Here is a link to the font. You are welcome to download and use the font if you so choose.
Please note that the symbols are all in the Private Use Area. Early in the research I used the plane 15 Private Use Area, but realized that using them with most of the software that I had available would be either impossible or difficult, so the symbols are also available in the plane 0 Private Use Area. Please note that for convenience at the time, in order to produce the font I started with a copy of my Sonnet to a Renaissance Lady font. Many of the symbols are only in the plane 0 Private Use Area.

On Tuesday 26 July 2016 I published Chapter 6 and Chapter 9. Chapter 6 was in sequence. Chapter 9 was not in sequence. Chapter 9 was published early as it is a separate strand of the story and I wanted to be able to refer to its content elsewhere in relation to advanced glyph rendering research and development. As Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 are now published, I have added a link to Chapter 9 after them. I have not altered the notes of Tuesday 26 July 2016 at all, so that a historical record of how this novel was published is conserved, so the link to Chapter 9 is still available within those notes. It is for each reader to decide when to read Chapter 9.

Yesterday afternoon I was thinking through my ideas for Chapter 7. These involve the Poetry through the Language Barrier evening at La Flava Floro. I mused that there could be a poster for the event, so I decided to try to design one. I decided to make the poster at A3 size, portrait format. I used the Goudita SF font, a font that is bundled with the Serif PagePlus software that I am using to produce the PDF documents, to produce much of the text, and I used the Eutopian Architecture font, a font that I designed and produced myself, for the name of the venue La Flava Floro. Well, there should be a date and time, yet this is a novel and it is happening now, now in this context being whenever the reader is reading the novel, so a particular date does not work. So I just used the # character for each unspecified digit. Yet I decided that the event would be held on a Thursday. I exported a png graphic at one third of full size, linearly, which is one-nineth in size as regards area, as that seemed a good size to have on this web page.

Yesterday I tried making two A3 posters, each for the first poem, one using the localization into English and one using the symbols.

I then tried, as an experiment, using a font that looks somewhat like handwriting to give the impression of someone having printed a copy of the poster with the symbols and then writing in a localization into his or her own language, only filling in some of the lines so as to try to give the impression of someone doing that now and that the task is in progress.
Anyway, I have added the result of the experiment to this webspace so that perhaps some readers might be inspired to print a copy of the localizable_sentences_the_novel_first_poem_poster_symbols.pdf poster and add a handwritten localization into a natural language, or maybe just to edit a copy of the PDF document, or maybe produce a new document.

As the font used for Chapter 16 is Goudita SF and there is no italic for that font, Chapter 16a is typeset using Aldine401 BT Roman and Aldine401 BT Italic.
Using the Serif PagePlus X7 desktop publishing program I made a copy of the source file of Chapter 16, then first changed the whole of the text of the new document to become typeset in Aldine401 BT Roman and then changed the two flashback sequences to become typeset in Aldine401 BT Italic.
I then used the Serif PagePlus X7 desktop publishing program to produce a PDF document.
Goudita SF is based on the printing of Nicolas Jenson in Venice in the 1470s. Italic type was not invented until later.

I have continued experimenting with which typeface to use.
I have been experimenting using a font named Worcester SF that was bundled on the Design Disc of the Serif DrawPlus program version 7, a program from a number of years ago.

Here is a recent research paper that I produced. This research paper is not part of the novel. The research paper is about localizable sentence technology and thus is related to the central topic of the novel. Indeed the novel began as a way to try to gain interest for the technology and thus make progress for the research project that has been my research project since 2009. Yet as I have an interest in creative writing the novel has also provided a way for me to enjoy creative writing as well and the scope of the novel has expanded from its original purpose, though that original purpose continues.

At present Chapter 23 is about Jane, at Arts Magazine's offices, in discussion with Edith, over the telephone, with email support for detailed text and for images. The Editor of Arts Magazine has been sent some designs for glyphs for some suggested localizable sentences by a reader of Arts Magazine. The Editor of Arts Magazine has asked Caroline and Jane to look into it.
At present Chapter 24 is about the format for the encoding of a localizable sentence into a GS1-128 barcode. Edith asks John to suggest an encoding format.

On Wednesday 21 September 2016 I published Chapter 19 of this novel.
In order to produce that chapter I made a special experimental font. LOCSE936.TTF
This was started from a copy of LOCSE034.TTF, a font produced by me that is published on the web.
The 9 was because it was an out of sequence experimental font. It was not LOCSE935.TTF because that had been use for some other experimental purpose, I forget what.
Well, recently, in July 2017, my laptop computer crashed and I bought another laptop computer.
Alas, I had not archived LOCSE936.TTF. I should have done but I had not done so. I often archive things not yet published by sending myself a webmail with the item as an attachment, so then I can recover things from my webmail account. However, for LOCSE936.TTF I had not.
So I decided to produce a font to have the same characters, matching a far as I could the additional glyphs of LOCSE936.TTF as conserved in the Chapter 19 document, which has all of them except the circled zero.
I decided to use a new font name Localizable Sentences 971 and file name LOCSE971.TTF.
I had thought of using LOCSE937.TTF but I chose to use LOCSE971.TTF in case I needed to iterate the design to get it right, which I may still need to do as I have only done a few checks thus far. Then I could use LOCSE972.TTF and so on as needed.
Fortunately LOCSE034.TTF had all of the digit character glyphs in the Private Use Area at U+ED80 through to U+ED89.
I adapted a copy of the glyph for O for the circle, which may possibly be what I did before.
I adapted a copy of the glyph for f for the integral sign, which is what I did before.
I made a print screen image of an enlarged part of the display of the Chapter 19 document, consisting of a display of the integral sign, three circled digits and a capital letter from the Goudita SF font used for the text in the publication so as to try to get the alignment correct.
I worked out that the digits sit on the baseline and the glyphs are 13 units high by 11 units wide, with the unit being 128 font units and that I needed to scale the digits glyphs by 50% both horizontally and vertically.
The circle (though it is not a circle as such, just a closed loop) took a few goes to get correct. I deleted all of the on-curve points, then moved the off-curve points, then added on-curve points back in at the correct places, which is quite straightforward in this particular situation by using w and a in the FontCreator 8 program to move around the contour and add an on-curve point respectively.
So here is the font.

If anyone can think of a way to check out how well the glyphs of the new font match the glyphs of the old font, perhaps detecting any differences between the two I would be interested to know of the technique and the results please. I am wondering particularly about the integral sign.

My laptop computer, upon which I had started to write this novel, broke down in July 2017.
This novel, about using localizable sentences for communication through the language barrier, had reached 28 chapters published at that time. Chapters 1 to 27 and Chapter 80.
I obtained a new laptop computer shortly afterwards.
When my computer broke I had nearly completed Chapter 28, but that is probably now lost, but hopefully I can try to rewrite it. It is about an art installation to demonstrate the concept of localizable sentences for communication through the language barrier. The art installation being in the novel, not existing in the real world at the time of writing.
Just over a week ago I decided to try to write a new chapter for the novel.
I wrote for a while.
Today I realized that I had not added any more to the chapter and so I decided to publish the chapter, Chapter 29, as it is, rather than seek to add more to it. So Chapter 29 is a short chapter.

The British Library harvests this webspace from time to time, so it is possible that some later chapters could be missing from the latest harvesting that is available at the British Library as they were added to this webspace after that harvesting.
