The Glorious 16th

Water, water everywhere, and not a drop of it is flowing !!!!

June 16th fast approaches and I truly cannot wait. As you may or may not be aware, this date currently marks the start of the river fishing season. For the past 3 months, all anglers have been restricted to fishing still waters, lakes, ponds and canals. Now I'm not knocking these as they can offer good sport, even though some of them are ego boosters where you can't fail to catch. However, a river for me is the quintessential part of fishing and cannot be equalled.

The evening of Monday 16th of June will find my colleague and I down on the banks of the Avon at Wasperton, hoping beyond hope itself that we can catch some fish. You see the problem is that fish have an inbuilt ability to go on hunger strike on 16th June so normally, an angler will be so excited that he doesn't sleep the night before he goes only to get to the river and completely blank !!!! This is the frustration that is fishing.

My aim this year is to catch barbel and this is what I'll try and target from the off. I've heard reports that they are in the river at Wasperton but whether those reports are true or not remains to be seen. Hopefully this will turn out to be one fisherman's tale that is true !!

River matches will also be starting on the stretch at Barford too, under Barford AA. So hopefully I'll be able to get some match results from them too so catch rates can be noted.

This may well be the last year of the Closed Season though as there is general call across the country for this to be abolished. The current argument is that there doesn't need to be a 3 month lay off period as can be seen from results on still waters. I have my own opinion on this but that can wait until another time.

Tight lines to you if you fish and hopefully the next report will contain victory and fish !!!!
