Discovery Weekend, September 24th to 26th 2004

The photographs in this gallery were taken during the Discovery Weekend, 24th to 26th September 2004.

The three church congregations, along with some other groups of parishes around the Diocese, were invited by the Bishop of Coventry to run an event or events in the last weekend of September with the aim of communicating something of the Christian message to people who don't currently come to church in a fun, intriguing, inviting way. In the end we ran several events aimed at different groups of people but the responses were good all round.

The sleepout for young people attracted around 15 youngsters who spent a rather chilly night outside the Scout Hut in boxes and heard from Steph and Geoff of Leamington Christian Mission about their work with some of the homeless and very poor people of Leamington.

The Men's Breakfast brought together 36 men from the three villages who had a great breakfast and then heard a fascinating talk from a young man about the work of the International Centre for Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral in some of the most troubled places of our world.

There was an art event in church where people could sit and draw some of the different parts of the architecture or furnishings.

On Saturday afternoon around 60 people discovered more of the history of Wasperton on a walk around the village with a booklet which linked some of the history to different aspects of the way Christians view life and the world.

Sunday morning saw some special services, and Sunday evening was a superb Barn Dance and pig roast at the school attended by about 150 people. A good time was had by all and Revd David Jessett explained a bit about the weekend and different ways in which people could find out more about Christian faith.

Overall it was really enjoyable and very successful with probably more than 200 different people attending one or more events. Watch out for further Discovery follow-up events in future.
