The picture is a satyr (from the Roman villa at Casale in Sicily)- in reference to Sophocles' play Ichneutae - "The Searchers". There was a memorable adaptation of it by Tony Harrison performed in the National Theatre in 1988 - under the title "Trackers of Oxyrhynchus".
