LATEST NEWS :

At our meeting in April we were inspired to grow Japanese maples of every shade, colour and variety in a very entertaining talk given by Neil Kenney, who also answered general gardening questions.

The next meeting is on Wednesday 14th May. This will commence with an extraordinary Annual General Meeting at 7:00pm to discuss the future of the club, to which all members are invited to have their say. Our usual meeting will commence at 8:00pm with Derek Walton giving a talk entitled “Wild about a Garden”.

The Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:00pm in Barford Memorial Hall. We have an interesting and varied programme which covers speakers, demonstrations and garden visits. Each meeting ends with free refreshments and time to socialise. New members are always welcome, as are visitors.

We need to boost our membership in order to keep the club viable so do please come along and give us a try. You do not need to have a show garden of your own to become a member and the subscription is only £15 for the whole year. We are always pleased to see new faces, so please come and join us. The Programme of Events for 2008 is listed below.

MARCH MEETING :

The speaker for the March meeting was Mrs Jean Draycott whose talk was on the restoration of Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens in Birmingham.

Mrs Draycott gave some background history of Castle Bromwich Hall which is in private ownership and not open to the public and then gave an excellent illustrated talk showing how the garden had been rescued after decades of neglect to be restored to its Baroque glory, an accurate reconstruction of the period 1680-1740. All of this, of course, has been achieved by a group of dedicated volunteers who set up a trust in the 80’s. This is another fine example of a wonderful garden to visit that is virtually on our doorstep.

Everyone by now will have seen that the shop is well under way. The Gardening Club was asked by the Shop Group to have some input into the landscaping of the area. A few of us got together and selected plants that we hope will enhance the area and planting is scheduled to take place in the Autumn.

FEBRUARY MEETING :

Our meeting on 14th February began another exciting programme for the year. We were taken on a fascinating tour of Britain’s National Parks, and the huge variety of scenery to be enjoyed. We also learned the history of when and why the parks were set up to conserve some of the most beautiful areas of England and Wales for the enjoyment of the public.
